Attention - Password and Security Update

Hello all,

Over the next few days we will be implementing some changes to our forum password strength and password expiration policies. To make sure you continue having the best experience possible on the community, we regularly monitor the site and the Internet to keep everyone's account information safe. We've recently become aware of a potential risk to some accounts coming from outside of this community. Just to be safe, we are implementing the following changes to improve security even further:

1) We are asking everyone to change their passwords (and will force a one time reset). Along with every user on the forum, new passwords will need to be more complex, and can't be simple words (sorry, you can't have "fluffy" as your password anymore!). Please use a password unique to this community. Reusing passwords can expose your account indirectly when other websites (Twitter, Linkedin, Badoo, etc) are compromised; and

2) Your passwords will expire on a 365 day basis. When you login on the 366th day, you will have to change it.

We'll also be sending out an email to users to let them know about the changes, in upcoming weeks.

Thanks all,

Helena

Yes, makes me safe. My banks require 15 characters - one capital, one lowercase, one number, one special character, can't be repeated, can't be sequential etc etc.

So now I have to write it down...real safe...from myself

phew ... yes "remember me" option is good but i now use "321drowssap" as its complicated to spell "password" for many backwards not mentioning counting backwards is hard too.

As one of those very old time programmers that started over 40 years ago programming (second career) on the Old Blue IBM Mainframe, we did not have to deal with this stuff. Now at almost 70 years of age I have production ID's, test ID's, PC ID's, word processing ID's, network ID's, & each MUST have their own password! Good thing my mind still works! Oh, by the way, I think I am lost & cannot find my way home. Anyone have directions?

The OP is in fact a member of VS staff (I really only know from previous posts in and out of the staff chat sections). I believe it is their personal account. It happened once before where a staff member did not realize which account they logged in as.

When in doubt we can always invite @Admin in to confirm it for your own piece of mind.

As for this, the article fails to mention that the breach was for a third party plugin. This breach is on countless sites across the internet and not just limited to ours.

Their system was compromised and they grabbed user data for us and thousands of others. We cleared our part of the breach and went this route to further security. This is also in place as many members on the internet use the same or similar passwords across all things they use.

We cannot go into detail at the moment as it is being dealt with on a legal level.

You can go ahead and change your passwords now if you'd like, just know that you will still be prompted to change it again once we roll this out.

Thanks everyone!

Dayle

Winchester, funny you should mention her. I found out that she is the grand daughter of Amanda the exotic dancer I knew from my college days in Akron, Ohio. Same build & red hair. Imagine that!
She just laughed at me & called me old man. I only had my drivers license & company ID. She was just like her grandmother.
