Hey everyone. I'm new to sport bikes and needed some help from you all.Recently started hearin a knocking noise in the engine. I cant quite pinpoint where it's coming from but seems to be the left top side of the engine. Checked the oil level after shutting off and it seemed to be very low. Assuming a rod is going bad or something of that nature of . Really frown apon getting a used engine not knowing the condition of it and bam something happens again. Would like to rebuild the engine having slight more power but durable. Head port and polish and cams maybe. Would like you all opinion and knowledge on rebuilds what to do or not to do. Thanks in advance for all your help

Welcome.

First confirm the damage.

Drain the remaining oil into a clean white container and look for silver and copper colored bits. This would be bearing material.
If it is almost empty. Put a quart in, idle for a few minutes and drain that.

Next, carefully cut open the oil filter and look in the pleats for similar material.

If they are reasonably clean, you should be OK. Something else is making the noise.

Just my thoughts:

It is rarely economical to try and rebuild a motor vs buying a used motor. If you did damage a rod bearing, you also got the crankshaft at minimum.

Yes, buying a used motor is a crap shoot, but most reputable dealers will give you some warranty that it is mechanically sound when you get it. You will pay a bit more for the motor and it will probably be worth it.

The big question is whether you want to ride this season or rebuild a motor during the sunny days?

May I suggest you buy a used motor for about $1k, put it in and then you have time to diddle with the old engine. You can always sell the used motor again if you ever get your motor back together.

Keep in mind, you can probably part out your engine for $500-$600 if you're patient.

Lastly, post an intro, with pics of the knocking bike, in the "new riders and members" section when you get a chance.
