This is as reported by local news "Pvt. 2 Michael Wallis, 21, of St. Joseph, Mich. was the soldier who died in a motorcycle accident Friday in Burnett County, Fort Hood said Tuesday. Wallis was a light-wheel vehicle mechanic who joined the Army in April 2005. He has been assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division’s Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Brigade Special Troops Battalion since September 2005." Now I have a lady friend of mine who dispatches part-time for the sheriff's dept in Burnet Co. and she stated that the motorcycle involved was a new R6 and was called in at approx. 1a.m. She also stated that a car had called in the accident, not other motorcyclists. According to their report the rider failed to negotiate a turn, veered off the road and the rider being thrown from his bike. The weird thing about this accident is the time it occurred and the fact that the rider was riding alone on a very rural road. I grew up traveling that road and I hate to travel on it in a car at night due to the remoteness of it and the fact that there is wildlife everywhere out there. Just seems weird that a lone, newbie would be so far out there by himself at 1a.m. in the cold riding. Then again, that road is sometimes used by people to return home from Austin, TX to Copperas Cove, TX so maybe be he was just trying to get home. Sad though, my friend at the Yamaha shop just did a service check on the bike 2 wks ago and said that the soldier's girlfriend had bought him the bike. RIP young soldier

I hope the gf doesnt hate herself .. =( I hear that soldiers returning from Iraq have something like a 30% more chance of being killed in a motor vehicle accident then a civilian when they return home, due to believing to be invincible after surviving such a dangerous place.

I wouldn't doubt it due to the bikes and cars they buy with the money they have saved. I'm not saying they don't deserve it. I can only speak for what I have seen in my Army friends. They do come back to get bigger and "better" toys than what they had before they left. Whether or not the machine played a factor in their deaths/injuries or their state of mind remains to be seen. You do see a rise in motorcycle deaths/crashes after an entire division returns, then after a couple of months those accidents decrease. But you have to figure that if 15,000-20,000 soldiers return home within a month or two, some of those soldiers will get bikes or cars. Then it stands to reason that some of them will get involved in accidents resulting in death/serious bodily injury. Does that correlate to Iraq? I think not, I think you have just added 15,000-20,000 more potential drivers out on the road to potentially get in or cause accidents. Now, this soldier according to what was published has not had an overseas tour so that cannot be a factor.

Sad to hear about this loss. We are losing enough soldiers in Iraq. Not sure if the military is doing it already, but they should look at de-briefing these soldiers and making sure they understand that they are not invincible. I'm sure it is probably already being done, although I got nothing when I came home from Saudi except welcome home and take a couple days to adjust to being home. I hate hearing about the loss of anyone, but losing our soldiers really hits home with me because of past military duty. Prayers go out to family and friends.

Sad to hear, we have lost a few here in Hawaii since we returned from Iraq and Afghansitan last year. Many guys save all their extra cash and do come home and get new toys. This was a new PVT so that would not be the case, though he may have enlisted with a nice cash bonus for coming in and may have bought it with that or whatnot. Who knows. RIP.

If Killeen or FT Hood don't motivate a guy to get out of there and ride a new bike I don't know anything else that could as much as those two places. I'm watching the 30% probability factor. Seems pretty boring. But I'm not going to go the route of plugging in an MP3 player and be messing with it while riding. Read two accident reports the army put out on two seperate recent harley accidents. Both at stop signs that were blown by cars. One guy ran the stop while drunk and the other stopped then pulled out in front of the bike. Everybody could of been killed by those bad drivers. Could be army and marines are more prone to ride in cold weather so while civilian guys are whimping out the army guys are wearing layers with goretex cruising. Doesn't help that the road and tire conditions are lousy though. Fool choice but sure is nice to enjoy riding waiting for the next year deployment.

wow, wonder if this is the same guy my brother rode with. hes stationed in killeen, and while he was here visiting, he got a call from one guy in the group. guess the guy went to fast too soon, brand new R1, and had only been riding for about 3 weeks. no gear... didnt make it either.

The guy you are talking about was a roommate of my friend. New R1 and new rider does not mix. Plus no gear...not even a helmet. He crashed about 150 yards from his own drive way on a road 30mph road that is known for having sketchy surface. I see the memorial cross where he crashed almost every day. Another soldier died the other week from Ft. Hood. New rider on a new 2006 GSXR. He ran wide on a turn, crossed the center stripe just enough to clip the side of an SUV that was going the other direction. When he clipped the side of the SUV he lost his balance, fell off of his, and was struck by another car that was behind the SUV.
