Hey guys, I have been riding now for about 3 months and am moving down to HB/Newport area. I am still attending CSUN and will be commuting the 65+ miles atleast 2-3 times a week. Any recommendations on how to make it more enjoyable and safe as possible? I will be just going straight up the 405 from Brookhurst and getting off at Nordoph(sp) street. Thanks Mikeyk

I think I've only ridden the 405 once... But why you moving so far from your school? U might want to rent a room up there to stay during the week days.. 405 is bad enough in a car!

there is hope brother... well that depends how fast caltrans can get the carpools open. there is an existing carpool from h/b to lax, then the carpool picks up again in van nuys to nordoff. on your way south, there is carpool from nordhoff to wilshire blvd. then it picks up again on LAX. I know caltrans have big plans on connecting the gaps on carpool. I hope they finish before you get your degree. Glad to help a fellow matador, I'm coming back there on fall.

they are still working on the carpools but it doesn't look they'll open soon. I take sepulveda between wilshire and burbank instead of the 405.

I work by LAX airport and 405 is always has traffic, try to stay up by CSUN if you can, it's a long ride up to CSUN from HP but with traffice all the way is not fun on your bike or on in a cage

oh man 405 sucks. The roads suck, it kills my tires cause of all thel ines down on the road, not very comfortable cause your wheels are rattling back and forth. Seems like the 405 has been making my tire wear out fast! My girlfriend lives right across from CSUN. So i live there half of the time. Traffic is really bad on the 405 and the lines are kinda tight. If your not really fast at splittin lanes, i recommend taking sepulveda too, nice little twisty ride, road is rough though, its fun and drops you off by the 101 or you can take it all the way down. Stay away from Balboa, a lot of traffic cops sitting there with radar/laser. I normally take sepulveda till like sunset then I get back no the 405, I friggin' love sepulveda, so fun. But seeing how your new, be careful, 405 is a bitch, crazy ass drivers and the road surface makes it worse, bike can get unstable at some points but its more on the valley side. Sepulveda is a much longer route, but it will be quicker if your quick in the twisties. Just don't get cocky, sepulveda is a haul ass road but really bumpy. And why you moving so far? Did you just move out of the dorms? If u want a local place to stay, check out NCR (northridge campus residence) which is right next to csun, they are studios and are really really really cheap.

I used to do anything to avoid 405...that's the bumpiest freeway I've ever ridden. Everyone else has it down though, be careful on Sepulveda... No matter which way you go it's going to take a while so you might as well make it worth while.

I found out this the hard and bumpy way. I Started out riding the 405 till I found out about sepulveda. Sepulveda can and is alot faster.

i've been riding the 405 for two years now between 118 and 10 with no issues, i agree that the regular lanes are bumpy, but the carpool is cool. there is a sweet spot on the north bound west edge of the #1 lane, that strip is smooth and you won;t feel like a bobblehead.
