04mladin 06-19-2006, 09:12 AM Can anyone tell me anything about the skills test to get your endorsement? I have the permit, and a friend and I are going on Thursday to take the skills test. I hear it is pretty hard on a sport bike. Any info to get us ready would be very appreciated. Thanks
Valhalla 06-19-2006, 09:13 AM its easier to take the MSF course in your area and just take that cert into the DMV for an instant license. thats the route my wife took when she got hers.
wasntme 06-19-2006, 09:48 AM He is correct. Take the course....you will learn some good information and get your liscense at the end.
04mladin 06-19-2006, 09:51 AM so has anyone taking the test, or everyone take the course?
Valhalla 06-19-2006, 09:59 AM i took the WV test and it kicked my ass on a sportbike. my wife took the MSF route since we have been living in FL. i dont think i know of anyone locally that took the DMV test.
Lamosa 06-19-2006, 10:03 AM I took it on my 06 750 and barely passed. The turning radius got me and zig zag cones. Take the course and save yourself the embarassment.
sixxer 06-19-2006, 10:14 AM I hear it is pretty hard on a sport bike.
i was told the same thing. i got my permit and rode on that for about three months went and took the test, passed 1st time with only -1 point (hit 1 cone) its pretty easy.
cones, quick right quick left, quick stop, make a u turn in a small space i would say about the size of two parking spaces without putting your feet down or going outside the lines, going about 15 -20 then stopping before a line without going over the line and you can lock up the rear without getting points deducted. its easy it also depends on the person giving you the test. i was lucky to have a cool guy that mainly looked at how i controlled the bike in every obstacle. also make sure your blinkers, horn and brake lights work when you go.
DONT PUT YOUR FEET DOWN IN THE OBSTACALES UNTIL YOU ARE STOPPED / DONE POINTS DEDUCTED EVERY TIME YOU DO.
In the Zig Zag they actually let you put your feet down (point's taken off) But everything else wasn't that bad. You have to accelerate and then stop make sure you gear down as you stop they watch for that. I believe you have to go above 12 miles an hour then do a sudden stop and they will see how far you slid then they will average your speed from there. I had to do the U turn and that's about it. Not really all that hard if you ask me well if you haven't taken it yet GoodLuck.

GsXXX-r 07-05-2006, 09:25 AM i heard you can do it on a moped/scooter. and its hell of alot easier. But Im just going to take the class, cause you learn things that you need to know. GL
I took the MSF course in Florida, and I honestly couldn't imagine doing it on a Sportbike. I don't know if the skills test is the same as the course test, but the figure 8 manuever about killed me, lol. The weaving and everything else was cake, but the figure 8....maannnnnn...... :headshake (I still passed though).
I took the skills test up here on my mom-in-laws Buell Blast, and it was cake. Aced it. But all the sportbikes there the same day failed. Not a single one made it through the weaving.
If you do decide to just go for the test and get it over with, remember to keep your speed up weaving. A lot of people slow down, then they get wobbly, then they get more worried about falling over than the cones and that's when they screw up. Keep your speed up, and just cruise through.
Everything else, just pay attention. Don't get nervous.
GsXXX-r 07-05-2006, 11:39 AM Well if my MOM 50+ years old can pass the class. Then I doubt its that bad. Ill pay the 250 and just takeit

You're definitely gonna want to rent one of their little 50's they have there. MUCH easier to maneuver, expecially around the cones test. It's a very thorough test, the course might be a good idea before the exam, although I didn't take the course. I just barely scraped by the exam. Just some words of wisdom. Good luck on the exam! :)
outlanderlet 07-05-2006, 06:07 PM i took the course with patriots and good lord i thought i knew how to ride before i took it and found out i didnt have all the skills i thought i did .
so i hoghly recomend it ,just do yourself a favor and chill in the U turn area it looks rough but its not that bad really
R1HOOLIGAN 07-06-2006, 05:27 AM I practiced for the test by borrowing a ton of cones from a neighbor (the tall orange ones). I laid out the cones as per the diagram in the book. Aced it every time (I was on a Honda Nighthawk 750). Then I went to take the test, and the damn cones were those little ass suckers that look like Halloween candy corn! The course was laid out behind a fire station, and the firemen came out to observe/amuse themselves. I did great on the normal maneuvers (Quick stop, etc.) but slaughtered the "pedestrians" (as she called them) on the slow stuff. I was cussing out loud the whole way like I have never cussed. I looked up and she was over with the firemen and they were laughing their asses off :laughingr . She came over, put her hand on my shoulder and said "uh, you passed" (she was still laughing). I still think I passed based on the entertainment factor.
so as long as you never have to weave around pedestrians, you're all set, right? :D

You got it! Especially if they are 1" tall and look like candy corn
lol...if you happen to see a 1" tall candy corn lookin' pedestrian, run him over, and take pictures. I'll pay the bail just to see it! :D

I'll keep my digital camera with me just in case  Hey, I lived through the '60's (I think)..Seeing candy corn people is not out of the question
