Hi guys, I just joined the forum. I'm having a problem with my gsxr that I can't figure out. I bought the bike a couple weeks ago, it is a 96 Suzuki GSX-R 750 (SRAD). It has about 23,700 miles on it. The bike is in excellent shape for a 96. The only mods are Renthal sprockets, K&N air filter, Stage 1 jet kit. (The bike originally had a full Yosh exhaust on it, but the guy I bought it from replaced the exhaust with a new full stock OEM exhaust (header/midpipe/muffler). Here is my problem:
The bike starts up fine when cold. It idles fine when the bike is cold. When the bike starts to warm up, it begans to idle very erratically and rough (usually starts around 200degrees or so). This is very bad when sitting in traffic as the bike will idle worse and worse, and eventuallyl die. When the bike dies from the rough idle, it will not restart. It will crank just fine, but it will not fire up. I cannot figure out why this affects the bike only at idle, when it is hot.
Here is what I have done so far:
I have tested the full electric system. The bike has a brand new battery. The voltage regulator tested bad, and one of the black stator wires on the voltage regulator plug was corroded and had melted the connector. I replaced the voltage regulator with a brand new stock Suzuki unit. I replaced the connector. The battery charges fine, it reads around 12.5V at idle, and up to 13.5 or so at 5K RPM when charging. I have tested the stator, ignition coils, checked the wiring harness, and everything checks out fine. I have tested all these components when the bike is cold and idling fine, and then I have retested them when the bike is hot and idling like shit. All components check out fine in both cases. I replaced all the fuses on the bike (the 30A main fuse, and all the 10A & 15A fuses on the fuse block up front.)
The bike has fresh gas. I checked the plugs, they all look good. Every plug is firing fine. The bike has had a recent oil change. I have the idle set right around 1000 RPMs. When the RPMs are dropping down, the bike often hangs around 3-3.5k or so, before dropping down to idle. This doesnt seem to affect anything. If I set the idle screw up any higher, the bike will stay idling above 3k.
Can you guys please help me out, give me some new ideas? Why is the idle on ly affected when the bike is hot? Above 3k RPMs the bike runs perfectly, even when it's idling bad. I thought this was an electrical problem, but I can't find any problems. I plugged/unplugged all the connectors in the wiring harness. i havent found any damaged/corroded wires in the harness, short of the one connector on the voltage regulator. Could carburetion be causing this issue? (it's a 96..the bike is carbureted). The TPS?
I believe the ignitor/black box could be going bad on my bike when it heats up. I am hoping somebody out there might have a 96 or 97 GSX-R 750. (These are the only years/model that the part number is the same). If you would let me try your ignition box on my bike, I would really appreciate it. I'll buy you a six-pack of whatever beer you want. I would really like to do this to see if mine is really bad before I buy another one.
It wouldn't damage your bike at all. All you need to do is remove the seat, and I can switch the boxes. They only have 2 connectors for the wiring harness, and I can just plug it into my bike. I'll just need to ride my bike for 15 minutes or so til it gets hot, which is when the problems happen (The bike idles extremely rough and eventually dies out, and will not restart). Once it gets hot I can see if it idles better or not, telling me whether or not my Ignitor box was causing the problems. I'll come to you and bring you the six-pack. You can hang onto my wallet and cell phone while I ride the bike for 15 minutes w/ your ignitor in it to see if it fixes my problem or not.
If anybody lives in San Diego, and could help me out, I'd really appreciate it!!
