01-03 600 to 750/1K motor swap

hey guys and gals, i made this writeup for motorcyclehaven.com for when it finally comes online. due to the recent repeat questions on the topic i decided to post the writeup on this site also. enjoy, if you ahve any questions feel free to PM me about it. this swap was for a 600/1K. the 750 is the same except for the oil cooler and the motor mounts are harder to fabricate due to it being a closer fit. The first thing you will need to do is make sure you have the time and tools to spend a good solid day or two to do this mod. First remove: all the bodywork gas tank headlight assembly battery all the zipties that are binding the wiring harness to the frame airbox rectifier shift linkage subframe ECUIt will look something like this: http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c158/02_GSXR_600/DSC02092.jpg (http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c158/02_GSXR_600/DSC02092.jpg) Now also have the donor motor ready. In the picture you can see the donor GSXR 1000 frame and motor sitting to the right of my bike. I left the old headers on the motor all the way until the end to ease the installation when it comes time to actually put the motor up in the frame. That way you dont have to put the motor up on a jack and risk damaging the oil pan. Once your bike is in this state it is time to pull out your old "slow" motor. The motor comes out pretty easily and you should have a friend or two come help for this part. First you will need to remove the front bolts from the motor mounts. They are located on each side of the motor and connect the cylinder head to the frame. Now that you have the front motor mounts out of there you will notice the motor is still magically held snugly into the frame. Heres where you need a little bit of actual tools and muscle. The motor is now held in by the two rear motor mounts and you will either need to purchase the tool from suzuki or do as i did and take an old strong socket and grind it down until it fit the special bolts on the rear mounts. It took me about 20 minutes to get the socket ground down to fit just right using a grinder and a dremel tool. Once the tool is made to fit get your friend to firmly hold the bike and while he is holding the front brakes, use the special tool and a breaker bar to loosen the rear motor mounts. Heres when the motor is about to come out. place a Hydraulic car jack or some type of pallet under the motor so that it rests on the jack and takes the tension off of the motor mounts. Your friend should still be holding the bike (just in case). Remove the two rear motor mount nuts and thread the support shafts out of the motor/frame. Heres where you find out if you got all the wiring properly un-fastened. If everything is unsecures properly you will just have to roll the motor out from under the frame. Your friend may need to pick up on the bike and help move it around to get the motor out. I used a cherry picker at this point to lift the back of the frame where the subframe mounted up. Part 2. The new monster motor goes in: First things first. hopefully you bought the motor mount kit from Hybridracing (http://www.hybridracing.ca/Products/Mount.asp). This mount kit will save you ALOT of headache and time. I custom fabficated my own brackets (actually a local welder did) and it took a few hours to get it just right. Not to mention you will need to be pretty skilled at welding aluminum. The mount kit from Hybridracing is top notch. Here is a picture of my custom mounts: http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c158/02_GSXR_600/DSC02667.jpg (http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c158/02_GSXR_600/DSC02667.jpg) Lets start on the install by grinding the frame at the front mounts down on the inside. You need to make clearance for the mount kit. Don’t worry, you will not need much room. You are looking at about 1/4 inch on each side that needs to be ground down. After you get it all ground down the engine installation is the exact same as the removal was. Mount the rear motor mounts, then bolt up the front end. This is where i liked having an old set of headers on the 1000 motor. When i jacked the motor up into the frame I had it sitting on its headers and not its oil pan. once the motor is in just re-route the 1000 wiring harness through the frame and re-secure it where it needs to go. The radiator from the 600 can be used but it is recomended that you use the 1000 radiator since the fan will be on the correct side for the wiring harness and you will not need to fabricate any custom mounting tabs for the 1000 oil cooler. If you do end up using the 600 radiator you will need to block off the bottom right side coolant return (right side if youre sitting on the bike). It’s the smaller line that comes from the radiator. The 1000 motor doesnt use it. All i did was use a little bit of fuel line and threaded a bolt into the end of the hose. secured the hose with a clamp on each end and its done. http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c158/02_GSXR_600/DSC02668.jpg (http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c158/02_GSXR_600/DSC02668.jpg) On the 600 radiator you will also need to make your own oil cooler mounting bracket since the 600 radiator doesn’t have one. I used a old license plate and just cut/bent it to suit my needs. The fan is also on the wrong side of the radiator if using the 600 part. That is a simple fix, just cut the wires on the factory 1000 harness and extend them to reach the fan on the other side. Connect up all of your switches, gauges, airbox (some say you need the 750 box, but i used the 1000 box and it works fine), fuel tank, computer, rectifier, subframe and exhaust. Make sure there is oil in the engine, turn the ignition to on and see if it fires up. The rest of the work is just putting the remaining bodywork all back on the bike. Here is a pic of the 1K airbox and how it fits: http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c158/02_GSXR_600/DSC02669.jpg (http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c158/02_GSXR_600/DSC02669.jpg) A sprocket and chain swap are HIGHLY recommended. The stock 600 gearing is way too low (compared to the 1000) for normal everyday riding and completely makes 1st and 2nd gear useless. Stock 600 gearing is a 16 front and a 46 rear in a 525 setup. Stock 1000 gearing is 17 front and 42 rear in a 530 setup. Good luck and enjoy yout new found horsepower!!

just did the swap , one thing i would like to add is that you dont have to take the tail section off the frame. another thing is that you can install the rear/bottom mount ,the engine and grind the 3 mounts at the same time . just make sure you cobver the engine good so no metal shavings get in. this worked best for me i didnt have to take the motor in and out a bunch of times. i started with 1/8" of the mounts but that was not enough i say do 1/4 " from all three mounts. thanks to everyone that helped me and Valhalla for putting this together.

a 1000 with cheap insurance. You have to throw the 600 stickers on the tail if you don't have them and do this swap. The big bikes will shit when you blow by em and throw the peace sign. Does anyone have the weight differences and quarter mile specs? Is anyone concerned about swapping for the beefier swingarm and inverted forks?

ive been pondering doing this swap for a long time, after doing some searches and asking some biker friends...everyone seems to know that this swap is possible but noone knows how hard. considering that this thread is quite old, hopefully bumping it and having some fresh eyes on this subject can help me out here. id like to do this swap on my 2001 gsxr 600 over the summer, but i havent been able to have all my questions answered. 1. what year gsxr1000 motors are canidates for this swap? 2. ive heard about a motor mount conversion kit, and priced it about $160usd. i forget what site i saw this on, but has anyone here purchased one and needed it or can give feedback on the quality on it? 3. are there cheaper/better mount coversion kits for this application? 4. i had a concern about the airbox from the 1000 not fitting...again, any experience with this? 5. assuming i get an answer to question #1...anyone got a motor for sale that i would be looking for? 6. id like to do some engine work on this motor before it gets swapped in, maybe more radical cams, stroker kit, port/polish heads, etc. best places online that i can just order performance parts like this, or maybe some writeups on getting parts and installing them as well? again, i realize this post is old but it seems to be the only closest match post for what im looking to do. thanks for the answers in advance :)

ill keep this post updated with more information i find on this topic, as it seems most threads on this topic get referred to the "just do a search, d'oh!" response...and as i found out, for a good reason! -taken from the hybrid racing site, "you can install an 01-04 GSX-R1000 engine into your 01-03 GSX-R600 frame". now i just need to source the engine -it appears that im best off finding a 1k motor and a 750 airbox for the easiest install, my 600 airbox will not work and the 1k is a tight fit, possibly requiring modification? (anyone confirm this, i saw one post on this) -also saw something about the 600 suspension not cutting it for the hybrid bike, possibly flexing the swingarm and being unsafe?(again, anyone can confirm this?) i plan on updating this post with more helpful info as this is the "go to" thread for swaps in 600s. assuming i get everything answered and ordered, i will get pics up.

Sportz989, Mounts dont line up and you will have to make something to make them line up. It should not be hard at all to make something to make it work:thumbup:

take ur stripped frame and motor mounted with the 3 out of 4 bolts that line up to a welding shop and get them to make you a bracket for that last bolt if u dont have your own welder. you will find that ppl who have lots of welding experience will find this task rather trivial, dont forget to mention its aluminum! edit: where is sprockit?
