almano 08-29-2006, 05:35 PM Hi everybody in Michigan! I will try the rider skills test this weekend in Detroit. Anyone has a good advice to help me out what good to know, or tricks? I never went to a riding school, but I ride since I was 13 yeras old, and I am doing trackdays as well. Should I will have any problems??
Thanks for the answers in advance.
monitor 08-29-2006, 06:00 PM I attemped mine last month. I too have a k6 750, first bike, bought it at the end of July. I found a guy that did the test for $25. I got past the accelerate and 90 degree left turn and then stop in the box fine. Failed the weave in and out of cones, put one foot down-3 points, went to back up to get better position-5 more points for second foot (wasn't told the foot vs point issue). You are only allows 10 points off your score before you fail. I lost my last 2 in the accelerate and stop like mad, overshot the distance alittle. So now I'm gonna take the safety course at Oakland Community College. Still only $25 but you get to use their bikes (small cruiser types 125cc-250cc). I heard a sport bike is the hardest to take the test on, but it can be done. Hope some of this jibberish helps out. And here is a link to a site, I know it isn't for Michigan, but the test is the same that I took.

Thanks for this!! It will help a lot!!!
Few more question. How wide is the test "track" and how long is it? How tight the sharp left turn, and if you know the - points how they score?
Thanks!!!!
Valhalla 08-29-2006, 06:59 PM most DMV test courses are NOT designed for a sportbike to pass. the smaller the bike you use the easier it is. find a friend with a rebel250 or ninja250 to take it on. hell even a scooter will be easy. im so glad i passed mine on the first try (barely)

I will rent a bike from the testing agency. I am sure I won't pass with my bike without practicing.
Valhalla 08-29-2006, 07:06 PM my wife took the MSF course and then took that certificate to the DMV and got her endorsement without taking any of the DMV tests. maybe you can look into that. the MSF is WAY easier to do and teaches you alot at the same time.

I already got my appointment with the testing agency. So i'll try this saturday. Unfortunately I have no time to do the MSF course. And it's expensive. The other thing I am more out of state then in Michigan, so I could take the test probably somwhere else then Michigan. I don't know if the Michigan "DMV" accept an out of state MSF Certificate.
monitor 08-29-2006, 07:20 PM The sharp left turn and stop in the box: the left turn lane is about 5ft wide and the exit it alittle wider. The cone weave and U turn: there are 5 cones each spaced 15 feet apart, and at a 3 foot offset from center alternating left to right and you get a 15ft lead from dead stop to the first cone. The Uturn space is about 20ft wide. Those are the only dimensions I have found so far. Valhalla is right on all accounts about the safety course which is why I'm taking mine instead of trying the test again.
monitor 08-29-2006, 07:22 PM At community colleges around the Detroit area, the MSF courses are only $25 Only problem is they fill up quick, I had to opt for the 2 weekend class because it was the only one available.

Thanks!! I will build a test course :) and practice myself. :):):)
gsxr750ridr 08-30-2006, 02:11 AM I don't know where you guys are at in Michigan but if you are anywhere near Warren, you can head over to Macomb Community College South Campus and practice the MSF course in the parking lot. They teach the courses there and the lines for everything are painted in the parking lot. You can cruise up there and practice anytime really cause the area where the course is never really fills up. Just another option out there for ya.

yeap, thats where I go to practice. The marked rage helps a lot.
for anyone that takes the 3rd party test, call this guy: Kinnie Driver Testing. He does it in Clinton twp, Romeo Plank/Cass, gonna give you a helmet and a 50cc Honda which makes it so easy to pass the test. It costs 40$ cause you are using their bike. You dont have to shift gears or anything, just go. He gives you the cone weave (the cones are far apart, not close), the sharp turn followed by stoping in the box, the U-turn, the quick stop and the swerve. Very easy.
cyourman 08-30-2006, 03:03 PM Schoolcraft college between 6 mile and 7 mile off Haggerty also has the lines down in the parking lot. They have the MSF class as well. The lines probably won't make much sense though without having some experience with the class.
Basically make sure you can take tight low-speed U turns. You want to be able to do that in less than 2 parking lot spots side. There is an off-set serpentine where you go around the outside of the cones and they are staggered. They will be marked on the ground with maybe 5 offset 4"x4" squares if I remember right. Those were the things that I worried most about. If you want, you can get some tennis balls at play it again, cut them in half and use them for practice cones. Good luck.
John_Deere_Polaris_440 08-30-2006, 03:27 PM lady next to lansing does it for 35$ and your not gonna fail.. i watched 3 black dudes on hyabusas drag there feet through the cones and still pass
as for it bein hard on a sportbike id beg to differ.. i never missed a point and cranked through the cones.... the more you worry abotu it the worse youll do.. relate it to real world shit you see on the road liek weavin around potholes we all do that on shitty roads goin at least 60 mph
remeber to use your body lean that bike around
the part where you have to get up to speed and stop as fast as you can stay around 15 mph dotn go faster than you have to
when you have to make a left tunr and stay int he lines make sure you swing out wide its wayyy easier to go way right and tryi to square up that corner..
really its just cake have fun with it
monitor 08-30-2006, 06:19 PM The guy from Kinnie Driver Testing, is his name Patrick? I did a google on the school name and found a myspace listing for someone named Patrick. I work at Telegraph near 8 mile so going out there wouldn't be a big deal. Gonna call tomorrow morning and see about setting up a test. If I pass his, there will be no need to take the MSF course through OCC.

there is no way that you can fail his test. He is awsome. I dont remember his name. There is 2 guys, a young one and a older one. The young one tested me a month ago and the old one my husband 5 years ago. Its way too easy. They do tests on Saturdays too
248/203-7973
They test at the east side. 8 Mile and Telegraph would be like 40 min drive for you.
monitor 08-30-2006, 07:07 PM Ok, maybe Saturday would be good, scratch that, betterfor me. Do you remember what you rode on when you took the test?

an old ass Honda 50cc. He gives you a helmet and you dont need to wear any gear at all. He puts it in 2nd gear and tells you - Go
lol
almano 09-02-2006, 12:40 PM I passed the test!!!! With 100%. No mistakes!!!! I am very happy. They give me a 2001 Honda Rebel.
monitor 09-02-2006, 11:15 PM Congrats on passing the test. I went today (Saturday) to take the test that Shortgirl led me too. But lo and behold it started to rain and the guy that was giving the test called when I was 7 miles away and said he had to cancel. I had driven about 40 miles just to get that far, oh well. I still have my schedualed class at OCC next Friday so I'll just do that.
