Cold weather riding

It's starting to get real cold lately here in Sacramento and I still want to continue to ride. My biggest gripe when riding in this weather is the wind hitting your neck and shooting up into your face. I was wondering what you people in the same situation do or wear for that matter. -James

I use a neoprene 1/2 face mask called the Gator. It has velcro in the back which makes your helmet a little more snug, but nothing too big. It does a great job keeping my neck and face warm. I've tried others, but usually they were too bulky. This one is almost perfect. Rode many times in 30 and 40 degree temps and this thing worked great. It should work nice for almost all the weather you will find in Sacramento. It is a cheap item that I would highly recommend. Purchase prices was, $10.99 plus shipping Purchased from, http://www.rangerjoe.com/ Direct link: http://www.rangerjoes.com/gatorface-mask-black-p-41.html

Yup, I feel you on the neck deal, it's been cold as hell around here the past week or two. I ordered one of these from motorcyclesuperstore.com: http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/item.aspx?style=22319&department=108&Division=1# and hope it'll work out well. I've got a foggymask in my helmet so it doesn't work too well with the skimask/nose covering ninja lookin' balaclava that I have for snow skiing & have been using the past few mornings for my neck/face area - it makes my visor totally fog up b/c the nose area "unseals" the foggymask from my cheeks and lets my breath creep up instead of down and out. I'll let you know how the one i ordered works out with my helmet/foggymask.

Hands are my problem - even my thickest Tourmaster winter gloves aren't warm enough for this weather. I can take about 30 miles before I have to pull over and warm my hands on the exhaust.

Roseville Cycle has some, not that specific brand though. http://www.rosevillecyclecenter.com/catalog_keyword_search.asp?keysearch=Go&keyword=face+mask No offense, but Roseville cycle pissed me off when I bought my gloves there, & I don't think I'll be going back there unless it is to try something on for sizing and then go buy it elsewhere. The couple times I was there it was about impossible to get anyone to help me out with questions I had. I then stood in line for 20+ minutes while their sales staff figured out how to process a return/exchange from the guy in front of me. I go to Good Times on Auburn Blvd. for service and gear now - those guys are awesome. They may not have the selection/size of roseville cycle, but their customer service is way better IMO, and they've started giving me a 10-20% discount on most stuff I buy there since they've seen me in there a few times & I've become a "regular" customer. They're always willing to be honest with me and they point me in a different direction if I can find something for cheaper or a style/brand they don't have elsewhere.

Hey good call. I just called over to Good Times. They have something very simliar to the Gator pull over. I'll swing by there after work tonight and buy it. You're not the 1st one I've heard say bad things about Roseville Cycle. I actually bought my helmet there and their customer service was bad. He just pointed to the helmet section really. They seem over-priced on a lot of their stuff.

They seem over-priced on a lot of their stuff. Yup, it was the same exact thing when I was trying to look at helmets @ Roseville Cycle. I was looking for help on sizing/styling/etc., and they were pretty much like "yup, we've got a good selection here, go ahead and try some on and buy what fits you best", and walked away. Uh, if I'm gonna drop $500 on a helmet, the least you can do is give me 5 minutes of your time and let me know what I'm looking for in terms of feel/comfort/safety/brand quality/etc. I went over to Good Times shortly after that and tried on helmets there - I can't remember the associate's name but he gave me awesome service - told me my facial type, what helmets my face would fit better in, told me how the fit should be, and he even swapped out a Shoei noseguard deal for the one in my Arai helmet since the Arai noseguard in the helmet I bought was kind of hitting the bridge of my nose. He changed out the inside padding in the helmet for me as well to make it a bit more snug, and then gave me great advice on how to change out the visor. To top it off, he gave me a discount because of the large amount of money I spent and also because I made a service appointment that day. He probably spent 30+ minutes on me that day and definitely made me a customer of theirs as long as I'm riding...

Ok, update on the balaclava - I'm returning it. It doesn't fit well over my face (I have the "long/oval" type), it is very tight and uncomfortable where it covers my nose, and it doesn't feel right at all when I have it on. I didn't even bother trying it on under my helmet, as I know I wouldn't be comfortable with it on. It doesn't have much elasticity in the area surrounding my eyes, so you can't really pull the material back without having it snap right back where it was. I can imagine being on my bike and having the material slowly creep into my peripheral vision and then being unable to move it out of the way b/c it would snap back. I'm going to look into some other neck/throat cold protection products and let you know how it goes. On a side note, I got several items coming as a result of a motorcyclesuperstore.com gift certificate - icon knee/shin armor (http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/item.aspx?style=15818&department=108&Division=1), a new CE back protector for my joe rocket jacket (http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/item.aspx?style=20211&department=108&Division=1), and some polar fleece glove liners (http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/item.aspx?style=4176&department=106&Division=1). I'll let you know how the glove liners turn out. I also plan on ordering some new gloves - the rocket speedmaster 6.0 (http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/item.aspx?style=26381&department=106&Division=1) once I go try some on at a local store and see what size works best. I'm currently using some decent Joe Rocket Sonic gloves (http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/item.aspx?style=15760&department=106&Division=1) but they are a bit bulky and don't feel like they fit me "just right".
