I live in NYC, in Staten Island. My question is... what are my privelages having a permit? Am I allowed to ride on my own or do I need a 21 year old supervisor? Because I know in PA you're allowed to ride on your own until dusk, but PA is far from anything like NY. Also, if I buy a bike, could I register and insure it while under a permit? Thanks a lot! I wantt o know this because my MFS course is not til another month. thanks

im gonna move this over to the NE section. laws vary by state and you will get more hits in that section.

You shouldn't have a problem registering and insuring it.

Okay great, because I think I might be buying it before I get my license and I would like to atleast be able to insure and register it. Thanks!

*lots* of insurance companies will not let a non-licensed rider insure a sportbike, a standard is fine though

You shouldn't have a problem registering and insuring it. I registered and insured my bike with only a permit, you should be good.

only thing i have to say is I hope you have a good job to pay the insurance cause you will need full coverage if you finance a new bike.and you being a new driver/rider id imagine its quite expensive. Also to finance from a dealer you will need the permit at least and insurance when you go to buy it. they need all that before you can take the bike off the lot. They do offer a restricted policy i think you can get while financing but then it will only cover if you crash on highways if im correct I dont know all the details but it will lower the insurance alot I did it before on my first bike and it lowered it $1000/yr btw also look into defensive driving courses they will also help with lowering insurance costs and maybe give you some helpful tips in your driving future.. Good luck with your new bike when you get it. gsxr's are great bikes I love mine even though its older :) Oh how i miss riding it :(

I heard in NY city they will impound your bike if you are not licensed, the only way you can get your bike back from the impound is to have a licensed motorcycle rider ride it back home for you. The impound fees are no joke, read the newspaper to hear about the bullshit road blocks to catch people with the no paperwork and the tow truck waiting to take the bikes.

Well Where I Am From The Way Our Dmv Works Is - No Problem Registering It Or Insuring It With Just A Permit. But When You Are On The Road You Only Have From 6am - 6pm To Ride. If You Get Caught After That I Believe They Suspend You For An Amount Of Time From Getting Another Permit Or Your Liscense. And You Don't Need Anyone To Be With You When You Ride - Just As Long As You Follow The Times. Oya In Case You Are Wondering I Live On Guam

If you get pulled over with a liscensed rider you will not have a problem. But on your own you can get your bike towed. A liscensed rider must be within a 5 mile radius.:arsenal Good luck with the bike and ride safely!!!
