he is also full grown..craay how small they are Who told you that? Where did you get it? I wouldn't count on it being anywhere near full grown. I'm not expert on turtle species, but that looks like some type of slider or cooter...and both will get much bigger than that. If it's a female, it could get up to about 10" long. I have 3 turtles now. 1 is a red eared slider and the others are Map turtles. What size tank do you have? What type of filter? Got a heat lamp and basking area?

turtles were some of my best pets......had 2 red ear sliders..they were badass in my 50 gallon...they had plenty of swimming room and would hunt goldfish like crazy hahaha. those tiny ones are dope tho...i have seen at pet stores and yes i believe they are full grown..they look cool in small "communities" i.e. 4-5 in same tank

Wow, nice turtle you have! I love it! I tell you a little sad but happy ending story, hoping it will never happen to your little turtle friend. My ex had 2 turtles like that, but they were bigger ( and older ). I think they were 20 y/o or more, maybe, and 8"-9" long. One day one of them fell from the 5th floor on the ground. The shell was broken in 2 half.. it was a massacre. We took her to a pet doctor who said (after X-ray ) that internal organs were OK and the head too, so he took something similar to fiberglass and epoxydic glue ( obviously non toxic ) and "repaired" the shell. We took the turtle back home, she was shocked, and for a week she stayed still, not moving at all. Then she started to walk and swim again, she went to the doctor again for check up, and after 3 years the doctor removed the fiber and the glue from the shell and it was perfect. A little asymmetric, but ok in the complex. This happened in '98 and the turtle is still alive now, that's incredible... Sorry for the long post...

I had one of those when i was young. I had him for a long ass time, i think over a year. Well he died on one of the coldest nights in my area. Where it was supposed to get below 0. Well I was a little kid and didn't know better and my turtle froze to death. I cried and buried him in my backyard. :-(

Oh My God! Ballhawk once had human emotions! and by the way, I am nearly positive that is a slider...or a painted....its not nearly full grown, give him some live food, a minimum of 74 deg humid enviro and a couple years he'll be 6 times that size

he is going to get bigger.... I had a lot of those when i was younger. Used to catch them when they were hatchin around my backyard... Kept them for a few years... maybe 6 or 7... They got to be a little under a foot long... I didnt kno they ate fish when i was little so i had little sucker fish... Came home from a weekend (not suposed to feed them EVERYDAY) and my fish were gone lmao Another time, when i was staying at mi abueliots, my dad went out of town for a few days... Fed them a lot before he left. When he came back, he picked me up and took me to his house and guess wat i see. One of my turtles headless floating... I think i started off w/ like 7 of them and ended w/ about 4 or 5... 1 drowned... Swam behind a rock i had in there and couldnt swim backwards out. And I had the tank outside once while i was cleaning. Started raining a lot (i didnt notice) and the water rose... 1 turtle got out and was never found... Damn this shit got long lol

The turtle WILL get much larger. I don't care what they told you when you bought it, they were lying or simply ignorant. You NEED a filter that's rated for twice your tank size, as turtle waste is much more toxic than fish waste. You need to do weekly water changes. If the turtle's eyes bother him after water changes, use a dechlorinator in the water. You MUST have a basking area with a heat light. Otherwise, the shell will never be able to dry and will rot. Shell rot can be lethal, and is very slow to heal....only after much money spent and time spent. You have to apply antibiotics 3 times a day and "drydock" the turtle for an hour each time...for weeks straight, until the rot goes away. Often, the shell will never return to normal. Check out turtletimes.com and this one here also: http://forums.kingsnake.com/forum.php?catid=32

If has markings on the head like this, it is a red-eared slider. http://www.engloid.com/FishTurtles/sassy10.JPG http://www.engloid.com/Turtles/DSCF0145.JPG As you can see, the color on the shell fades as they get older. This one's about 4.5-5" long. If you don't get a heat lamp and set up a basking area, you will have some very costly vet bills when the turtle develops shell rot. It's like having your hands in water all the time, never drying out. Your fingernails would rot. Same with the turtle. They have to get out of the water and dry off occasionally or fungus will set in and the shell will rot. This can often result in the infestation of maggots in your turtle.
