Good Afternoon,
Im in the market of buying a gsxr 600 and this one came into my attention. Its a 2003 Gsxr 600, 16k miles, clean title and everything but he's tellin me that theres a problem in second gear. Question is, for a mechanic in training, would this be hard to fix dependin what exactly the problem is? like tranny, clutch etc.. He's also asking $3.5k, is that worth it?
Thank you for your time.

If the clutch is slipping, then I think you just have to change the 2nd gear and that's it.

IMHO if you are training to be a mech ... go for it.. it'll be good for ya.. As for the price... here in So Cal .. as long as the rest of the bike is good.. then thats a decent price...

Has he let you ride it? Most wont, but I would give it a shot and ask for a quick test ride to get a feel for the bike, listen to it, make sure there are no wobbles, and of course check out the 2nd gear thing for yourself.

First of all, thank you for the replies. I emailed him asking what would the cause of it. He's some what sure that its the tranny. Would this be costly for me?
GSX-R..ider - The person lives in CT while i live in PA(School). Since my leg is still hurting, i'll be sure to make him ride it for me while hearing any problems. =)

I know the older (2000, and 2001) had second gear issues that require transmission tear down to repair. If you have a fairly high mechanical apptitude, I say go for it. That's the best way to learn. Figure out how much time it will take you, and cost for parts, and decide if it's worth it. I would say it probably is. I can tell you that I've learned a lot about my bike from working on it. I suggest getting a service manual before you touch a wrench to it.

That doesn't make much sense to me. I would think a slipping clutch would slip in all gears. How would replacing 2nd help that?
