I use that also. Change it more often then. It's probably how hard you ride.

It's a dispersant oil. It's intended to keep most of the crap in suspension. It means it's doing its job. Any oil that still looks clear after an oil change is not doing you much good.

I changed mine yesterday and it only had 1900 miles on it and it came out black. Just like Tee said it's doing it's job. I run Amsoil MCF.

+1... but, could mean that there could be engine problems... how many miles on bike. Excessive blow-by would cause your oil to get dirty quickly, but you would also be burning oil and consuming it quickly as well. So no, you're probably not having engine problems strictly based on the visual appearance of the oil. My oil looks completely nasty too when I change it. If you were really concerned, an oil analysis (for metals) is a valuable tool for detecting potential engine problems. These usually cost between $25 and $100 - you send in a sample of your oil, and you get back a report of the levels of common metals, and sometimes an assessment of what the analysis means. I personally don't think it's cost effective for motorcycle engines, but it's an available resource. Oh, and "kind of thick" is a good thing, unless it's completely sludged over. Good synthetics don't lose their viscosity much during the course of an oil change interval, so they don't thin out as much as standard oils.

with only 6500 miles, i doubt you have any engine problems, fairly new though for a 2002. i have a k7 with + 6,000 already haha.

Is this the first time you've drained with sythetic motor oil in the bike? If so usually the first time it will be very dirty because the detergents are higher in the oil and it cleans it out really well. Should not be as dirty from then on.

It takes very little time for oil to become visually dirty. That doesn't mean you have to change it more often than the manufacturer recommends (which is 3,500 miles), particularly with synthetic. In fact, my own bike, which has just over 50,000 miles on it, has had its oil changed every 5,000 miles (with full synthetic, since 7,500 miles.) And I ride the piss out of it. And the engine still runs like new.
