I just got a 2007 600 and i'm in the process of breaking in the engine. I've read in other places you should change the oil very shortly after you start riding it because of all the new metals being shaved off. Just wondering everyones thoughts on this. Should I change the oil soon or just wait till after the 500 mile break in? Thanks in advance

I concur. I wouldn't change it before the 500 mile (or 600 mile, as you maintenance schedule may require) mark, since many bikes are loaded with a special "break in" oil. The pickup strainer and filter will keep metal shavings from thrashing your bike.

Although "Break-In" is really a thing of the past, the initial change interval is to get machining and casting debris out of the engine. When you do change, Regardless of Brand, I always recommend a M/C Specific oil of the proper weight, with a JASO Rating of MA, better yet, MA 2, but never MB. Bob S. ADG

I drained my oil, removed, and replaced the pan with a billet aluminum pan at 33 miles. There were metal shavings in the stock pan too.

I changed the first oil at 600 miles. After that I never change new oil, I always put about 5000 miles on it first. (I'm sorry, I know that was cheap; but how do you pass up a set up like that?)

thanks for all the feedback i will wait till after the break in 600 miles and you are good... Stay away from Non M/C Specific oils and look for the JASO MA or MA 2.... stay away from the oil if it doesn't have one of those ratings.. Bob S. ADG

I will agree that "break in" is not as important today as it was 30 years ago, and you can get by without it, but all major engine manufacturers agree that it is beneficial, even though in some cases the degree to which it's beneficial may be academic. I used to write white papers on that when I worked in the field.
