i have a gixxer 600 k7. i dont know how much oil to put in it. pretty silly huh? the thing is ive been told 2 or 3 different answers, also in the service manual it says something different. dealers told me anywhere from 3.2 to 3.6 quarts. the manual says 2.3 without filter change 2.6 with. (seems to low). i know to check the eye.i know i do the start thing and let drip back down. but do u check with the bike level or on the kick stand? level it reads to much, on stand it reads just right. im really confused a little help would be very appreciated. thanks sketty

I believe the manual says to check it with the bike level. I just changed my oil (first time 2007 GSXR 600) and I filled it with 2.6 quarts and I cannot see any oil in the window. I'm thinking of filling it up a little more but I don't want to overfill and have to drain some.

Dont know how much difference there is in the K6 600 but my dealer told me 2.9 on my K6, but I've read in the book that it needs 2.6. I just split the difference, and it looks right in the window.

I don't really pay attention to how many "quarts" I just look at the little window and if the level is in the middle, then its good to go.

When I change my oil, when it comes time to fill, I put in about 2.5 quarts, or whatever it takes to come up to the center of the window (on a rear stand, so bike is level). Then run it, let it sit for the 3 mins they tell you to in the manual, then check the level again. Then I just fill it until the level is half way up the window again. Works out just about perfectly every time.

If the level is within the window, you're fine. If it's above that window, you could have problems. The biggest one is getting the oil aerated by the crankshaft - aerated oil doesn't lubricate well or pump well through the system.

i think the dealerships tend to overfill. both my gsxr 600 and my buds R1 were filled to a bit over the top of the window when new. ideally, the level should be right near the middle (after starting and allowing to drain), but it wont hurt anything to be at the top of the window. yes, overfilling can cause problems with oil leaks and, as mentioned, oil aeration (tiny air bubbles in the oil) caused by the crankshaft riding in, or slapping into the oil. these bubbles are picked up and pumped through the system. you need oil to lubricate engine parts, not air... that is why overfilling can be bad.
