I just had exhaust, filter and pc111 put on my k7 1000 and the shop put in Maxima 15-50 synthetic "extra" in. I have never used it, but I know that I can barely feel it shift. Anybody elses take on this brand?

15-50? Holy crap that's a thick oil - does your manual actually call for it?

Man, thats what they gave me. Monday I'm gonna double check. Maxima's website says its made for sport bikes.....but I was looking into it bc I haven't used it before. The bike runs really smooth, better than it did after its 600 mile check from the dealer though so......(who the hell knows.):headscrat

Well, I did check my own manual (05 750) and it does allow for 15-50 above 40 degrees, so it's probably fine (I doubt your year is different.) Assuming the oil schedule is the same, and again check it to make sure, I would recommend going with 10W-40 the next time your oil is due, as you are losing power and efficiency with 15-50. It may "feel" smoother, but it isn't giving your engine any additional protection.

the 15-50 is due to the fact I live above 8000 ft. atleast that is what a suzuki tech told me. checked around with other people and they said that is pretty common at high altitude.

I was not aware altitide had any bearing on oil...I know you may want to go heavier if you live in a hot climate.

elevation has alot to do with something so fine tuned as a sportbike, I wouldnt change 15-50 to a lighter oil, its hard to explain and I would have to type a shit load but trust me stay with it. with where your at it is like the flatlanders running a 10-40:headshake

I'm curious...

in a nut shell it has alot to do with air density, the ammount of oxygen in the air, and pressure.

I must have missed that class in the Cornell engine design program. Increased altitude causes most piston engines to run both hotter at high power (as a result of reduced cooling ability) and cooler at low power (as a result of lower ambient air temperatures.) This effect, however, is accounted for in the manufacturer's oil viscosity charts, which are typically valid from sea level to 10,000 feet for automotive and motorcycle engines. Aside from that, I am not aware of any direct effect of elevation on oil. Note that piston aircraft engines, including turbocharged engines that can operate up to 25,000 feet, have the same oil spec for sea level operation as they do at maximum service altitude.

aircraft is a totaly diff oil, your forgetting bermetric press. as a result of elevation, and the amount of oxygen at that level he is at with his bike

To answer the original question, Maxima has been an incredible oil in my bike. I worked at a shop for a while and we all took turns trying different oils in our sportbikes. We all opted for Maxima. Even my buddies R1 and its rough tranny smoothed out. I talked to a tech guy and he also said Honda full synthetic is at the top but it is the same price if not more than the Maxima. I also had good results with Torco non-synthetic but once I started the Maxima, just couldn't go back.

I am interested in knowing also... Not because I doubt either of you, Just curious
