what is the best stuff to use for a tune up

alright I am almost done with the handyman's special I bought as my first bike (97 GSXR 750). My cousin, an avid suzook guy, has been helping me along the way. I was wondering what are the best things to buy as far as a tune-up goes. I suppose it would help to say I am not out for track performance this will be a daily commuter and I am learning so reliability/consisitency far outweighs any desire for performance. What kind of spark plugs are good? What is the best brand/type of oil? Would upgrades in filters i.e. K&N be worth it, or stick with stock? Any other various suggestions?
