question bout oil changes.

Ok ok before you guys and gals tell me to use the search function I actually have a legit question. Why do you guys and gals take the bike in for it's services and not do them yourself? I understand if it is still under warranty but I will be damned if I am going to spend 100 bucks on a oil change. I am a wrencher so paying money out to stealerships is not fun for me. Just would like your input on this.

double check your warranty, wrenching yourself should not void it...keep all records of the work performed by yourself. dealership has never ever touched my bike, and never will.

k i was just wondering. Even a really good friend of mine has a harley and he took it in for its 600 mile then thousand then 3 thousand. This was in a period of 5 months and the bill ran him almost 600 a visit. I was umm no thank you I can do my own work! I work on my own cars I always keep receipts, more or less because i run a company too so I keep everything.

Well some of the reasons I can think of that may keep people from working on their bikes are. 1. No tools or a place to work on it. 2. Don't know how, BTW a great reason not to, mistakes can be expensive or dangerous. 3. Don't like to, want to, affraid to or do not have the time to work on it. 4. It also could be that it cuts into their "Nap" time :D

Just like there are people out there that really shouldn't be riding motorcycles, there are people out there mechanically inept enough that they shouldn't wrench them either. Me, I do most of my own maintenance, but I'll let the dealer do something that I don't have the tools or the time for, which isn't all that much.

Ive never understood this either but you always have those people out there who don't care to learn how or just don't want to do it. I have heard horror stories about dealerships not making sure the old gasket was off and putting the filter over it and having oil spill all over the bike while riding which is def a death sentence. The first thing you should learn besides riding is an oil change, its what your going to do the most often!

($120 @ dealer) changed it my self (with oil) for about 20 bucks i saved over 300 dollars probably. edit: i dont know to much about bikes i just got my first bike road dirtbikes and quads sence i was like 5 though it doesnt take a rocket scientist and just requires simple allen wrenches and socket wrench.

how much did that lift set you back? The lift and wheel vice is about $1700 and shipping was a little over $400. It's a 1500 lb lift which is over kill for the Gixxer but my Honda is around 700lbs and I may work on a Gold Wing from time to time for friends. http://www.handyindustries.com/shop/product_view.asp?idProduct=829&D=1&S=21 Harbor Freight has one for a lot less also the Handy wheel vice will work on it and makes a nice upgrade to the HF lift.

Ever got stopped by a smart--- cop on the bike who asked "you have a pilot license??" . LOL Actually, I did once! I got clocked over 100 mph on the freeway in the car. Cop said "Okay pal, can I see your pilot's license?" He laughed when I handed him one, and gave me a "break" by writing me up for 90 since it was Christmas eve and no other traffic was on the road.

I can never keep my garage that neat. My wife and kids like to take my tools and leave them all over the place. They never put shit back where they got it from.:headshake I go to use something and can't find it.....or find my tools all over the garage floor.:damn:
