Noob - oil level check question

Hey everyone...Today I did some routine maintence on my 97 GSXR 600 . I bought the manual , have tools and a little mechanical experience. I changed out the coolant, put in a new K&N air filter, and changed the oil and filter. Is there another way to check the oil level than using the round see thru window? The manual calls for 3 quarts, so I bought four to be safe. I put in a 3 quarts...rocked the bike back and forth...put a flash light to the window and I can't see squat! The window has yellowed a bit from age I guess and the new oil is like honey...so my question is - can I check the oil another way? I'd hate to keep adding more oil if its full ...and would hate to run the motor low on oil. Just looking for a little insight here...this is my first time changing the oil on this bike. Also- I bought everything I need to change the spark plugs...but when skimming the manaul quickly..I have to remove the fuel tank completely? Pain in the ass , no? I have about 4 gallons of fuel. Any shortcuts ? Thanks in advance.

The sight glass it the only way to check it. Be sure the bike is upright and both wheels on level ground (i.e. not on a rear stand). A little lean side to side or front to rear make quite a difference in what you see in the window. Great avatar BTW!

Thanks guys....I'll have to have someone give me a hand. My avatar is from a pup my Olde English Bulldogg had this winter...too bad my wife made me sell her though to pay bills:(

Any shortcuts ? Thanks in advance. You don't have to remove the tank completely, just take the 2 bolts off in the front and lift the tank up... I don't know if you have a tank stay to hold the tank up or you can always bungie it to something in your garage, ive done that before.

tank stay is a rod usually in rear by the tool bag to prop tank up.

Thanks - I got the whole prop the tank down- when I changed the air filter. I didn't think I could remove the air box assembly and have enough room to change out the plugs though...

I just did my plugs like 400miles ago. Its not so bad, once you get the airbox out you have more than enough room.

Thanks again - I was just checking because in the manual it says to remove the tank...that'll definately make things easier just propping the tank up!

call your local dealer. You may have to replace whole side piece or maybe just have to remove side cover but i'm pretty sure it's do-able. maybe ask john paul gixxer or jet mechanic (or jet pilot) can't remember his screen name.

that part i dont know, never had to replace one before :hmmm: JPG look closely at post 16.....I'm going to go eat auce shrimp and crab. But I thought and just confirmed the outside of the window on my k7 750 GSXR that there is indeed a snapring on the outside of the glass. appears to hold it in. perhaps take snap ring off and use something sticky ie gum, duct tape to pull old glass out and prevent it fromfalling into motor (if possible). HINT EDIT QUOTES

As you can see from this picture you should have plenty of space with the tank propped up to replace your spark plugs. And my home made tank stay works just fine. :D http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee278/ajgsxr/Picture005.jpg

hmmm.....It looks like a snapring holds it in. I wonder if u could take the glass out clean it and turn it inside out. That way you wouldn't have to buy a new glass.or run a motor cleaner inside, if glass looks dirty perhaps inside of motor does as well.

You can try it. If I didn't have a new bike I would do it. Plus I don't own a pair of snap ring pliers. I would bet it will do the trick, and if not you can put snap ring back on. Also I'd take something like duct tape or chewing gum to pull glass towards you once you take snapring out.
