Colonial Pipeline has successfully completed restart of Main Lines 1 and 2 and safely resumed partial service around 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 31, 2005. Original estimates of 25% to 35% of normal operational capacity for initial return to service have been exceeded, and Colonial is now operating at about 38% capacity. With the return to service of additional electrical power in Mississippi later today, Colonial anticipates that it will be able to operate at approximately 61% of normal capacity by the end of today (Thursday, 9/1/05.) Both gasoline and distillates are currently being transported and delivered.

Georgia fuel prices could drop by as much as 19 cents as of midnight. Gov. Sonny Perdue announced today a suspension of the state motor fuel tax through the end of September. The moratorium, which affects all fuels, goes into effect at midnight tonight. On a $3 gallon of gas, 19 cents would be saved by suspending the taxes. "My purpose in temporarily suspending fuel tax collection is to relieve some of the financial burden placed on Georgians by disruptions of our fuel supply resulting from the effects of Hurricane Katrina," Perdue said at a noon press conference at the state Capitol. "I fully considered the fiscal implications. This moratorium will have no negative effect on the state budget." Although the governor can authorize the waiver immediately, it must be ratified by state lawmakers. Perdue said the Legislature will meet in special session next Tuesday through Saturday. The taxes waived are the prepaid 7.5 cent excise tax collected on each gallon of fuel and a 4 percent sales tax on each dollar's worth of fuel sold, Perdue said. Right now you could get regular gas from $2.56 - $3.99
