dhwang80 03-11-2009, 06:47 PM Is there anyone on here so protective that to help prevent theft, they use a bike lock while it sits in an open garage?
I live in a place with an open carport (think 4 car garage with no doors) where I usually have the bike against the back wall and I park my car in front of it to block it off.
But when I head to work, there is nothing blocking the bike from exiting so I'm afraid of theft. Hence a regular bicycle lock

Now I know that if a thief really wanted it, they'll get it no matter what. I just want to make it a bit harder for the average joe to steal it.
Any others this protective?
cbpanther01 03-11-2009, 08:49 PM I dont blame I woud too, if i didnt have a garage. in fact im getting a GPS tracker where i can get on any computer and see where where it is
Shoua 03-11-2009, 08:55 PM I have a front disc brake lock. I also just got a new front fender. Go figure. :headshake:headshake:headshake
bbqb4racin 03-11-2009, 09:15 PM I just use a small brinks lock, the type that the bar comes totally off the pad lock itself and I slip it thru the front rotor and lock it. Cheap and effective
ace417 03-13-2009, 12:12 AM I have a very similar but much thicker On Guard cable lock that I put through my swingarm and rear wheel (to prevent the rear wheel from rolling). They can still steal if it they pick it up, but might as well make it as much of a pain in their butt as I can! :)
Oh and anytime I ride to the store I use that lock to lock my bike up to either a bicycle rack on the sidewalk or to the shopping cart rails (thing in the middle of the parking lot that you push the carts into.. whatever they're called! lol). And I have an alarm! haha Guess I'm a bit paranoid.. but I really don't want my bike stolen.
fox06gsxr750 03-13-2009, 12:48 AM I live in a condo with an assigned spot, i got lucky enough to have a tree in front of my spot so i run a thick chain around the tree and then through my sub frame. i was still paranoid even with that so i just bought a 2 way alarm that i'm gonna put on. gotta protect those bikes, i hate hearing about peoples rides getting stolen.
sunday rider 03-13-2009, 01:12 AM I used a disc lock and a kryptonite chain. then one day I came home to see my front wheel chained to the light post and the rest of my bike gone. Get LO JACK>>>>>
tony2001 03-13-2009, 06:35 AM I carry a 5ft Onguard Beast 5018 chain and lock combo at all times, and my bike has a Scorpio SR-i900 alarm on it with perimeter sensor.
The bike never gets left anywhere, without getting chained to an immovable object.
ALWAYS make sure whatever your chaining it to is secure, and ALWAYS chain your bike by the swingarm and wheels NEVER the wheels alone.
And of course FULL COVERAGE INSURANCE.
***None of this will guarantee your bike will not get stolen***

+1...very good idea .... have more then one cable or chain lock setup...a thief will normaly see what its going to take to steal a bike, the longer it will take them the less likely they will attempt it....nothing is going to be a sure thing, but make them think twice by making it harder for them
MR DANGLES 03-13-2009, 08:27 AM I carry a pistol in my pocket… granted I will have to catch them in the act but if I do someone is going to be having a bad day…
newmann51 03-13-2009, 11:21 AM I have a kryptonite chain that I use through the wheel and swingarm, and I also have lojack installed on it (got it like that). I am also thinking about a front disc lock cause i plan on parking in hoboken/jersey city over the summer.
Pistol 03-13-2009, 11:31 AM I use the new york forgetaboutit lock the best one for ur money. Always chain up my bike whenever in public view
DOBERDEWD 03-13-2009, 11:49 AM Well let me think about this one .... :headscrat
While at home, if I'm in and out of the house it just sits in the driveway but I have a full alarm and camera system on the whole house, shop and garage.
If it's on the road I will usually bring my COBRALINK that I bought almost 20 years ago that still works great. It's a little heavy but I've never lost a bike with it .... When I bought it, it was the only lock on the market that could pass the freon test ... (Blast any lock with freon for about 5-10 seconds and just hit it with a hammer. It will usually just fall apart .....) I've attached a picture of the cobralink
There are a lot of really good products out there now. Just do all your research and figure out which would work best for you and your particular situation. Check cycleworld.com .. I know that they do tests on things like this and usually put their non-bias findings either on the web or in their rag.
Otherwise I found this site for you on a few others ...
