trying to find out what would be a good suit to buy w/o paying too much, under $700. Looking for good quality also. Thinking of the alpinestar octane or sg-1 or joe rocket GPX type R. What do you guys think?
Also thinking of maybe getting a 2 piece, should i not?

DO NOT go with two piece suits. Alpinestars makes a good middle of the road suit in your price range. Also, suits will vary with your body type as well so best to try one on if possible. If you cannot try one on, call the manufacturer and speak to someone that can give you an honest answer about the suit vs your body type. If you are an average height/weight, slim but athletic build then I think you would be very happy with Komodo Leathers. I know that I rave about them but a couple of other members here also will endorse Komodo products. I'm 6'00" and 150-155lbs and my Komodo K-XP suit in 42 fits me like a custom suit. I've never been a fan of Joe Rocket suits. AGV makes good starter or first timer suits but they don't have all the features of top of the line suits. I had a couple AGV suits and thought they were pretty good until I got my first Komodo suit. Then I thought I may as well been wearing jeans and a jacket on the track because that's how I felt about the Komodo vs AGV

There way to many good suits in the $700 range. Alpinestars, Speed and Strength, Teknic, and Hein Gericke. Its hard to try and label just "one" as the best in that price point. There are to many factors than make each one a good suit. some of the things you can look for is.
1. Ventilation. Make sure you have good perf. for those warm days.
2. Protection. Always make sure its CE certified. Hard outer armor is best.
3. Fit. The most important. the suit should be tight. not restricting. mildly mobile. you shouldn't be able to do jumping jacks but move freely.
Taking those into consideration is how you should pick your suit out.

heard good things about komodo too. Was considering getting a Gericke celtic, but found a Astars SP1 and it fit like taylored fit to me. I got it for 650 brand new from cyclegear. Local store had a mark down. I also just purchased an SP1 riding jacket for the street because it fit me so well too....and it was marked down to 345...so....for my body type, Astars has fit me best so far.
Dont like Dainese. Fitment was strange, calves were huge on me and I have big calves, so I dont get that. Also their leather feels way too soft and weak.
Id recommend going somewhere and trying on as many as you can. Find what size and brand is taylored to your body size/type and go with that. Shop around though once you find your size and brand....then find the cheapest reputable place to get from is.

I have 2 suits that I wear on the track. A fieldsheer 1 piece with the speed bump in the back. It has nice ventilation for the warmer months. I got it from SBTG (a site sponsor for around 450 on sale). The other suit is a teknic chicane 2 piece non-ventilated for the cooler months (275 delivered from Newenough.com a super sale). NO speed bump in the back. I have not crash tested either but my friend has. He has crashed 4 times in the fieldsheer. The last one did the most damage. The suit was ripped near the elbow pads but he was unmarked. I may treat myself to one of the more expensive suits during the winter.
PS the 2 piece is more comfortable between sessions. You can just zip off the jacket and chill out.
