07 GSXR750 noise...ticking in the heads : GSXR.com Forum : Suzuki GSX-R Forums

Hey everyone... just got a GSXR750 a few weeks ago and am hearing some weird noise coming from the heads. I dont remember it when i bought the bike, but the second day i had it is when i realized the noise. is this normal? what kind of lifters are in these motors? thanks,

mine ticks when i 1st crank it up but after i ride her for about 10mins it go's away

mine only ticks during the warm up period. once i get to 140 and the oil warms up and circulates it goes away.

its gonna tick forever, most high rpm motors do it you can quiet it down a little by using really good full syn oil, and adjusting your valve lash so its to the tightest specs, it will still tick it will just be a little quieter and a lil more responsive

Mine is very light i cannot even hear it barely. I had to go start it up and put my ear next to the engine to hear it. If its really loud is when i would worry about it.

Yeah most tick. What I would pay attention to is if the tick gets louder or is inconsistent. The ticking should be louder on start-up and then quiet down as the engine warms up.

If the ticking (the normal kind) bothers you, pull up beside a Ducati and listen to the automatic chain tensioner rattle away. Trust me, after hearing that racket, you'll hardly notice a light Gixxer tick.

I've heard that it only takes about 2 mins till it's at temp.

okay... but i was lookin more for a certain temperature.. A good gauge to know I'm not mistreating my bike in this cold weather would be to start riding at what temp?

its always different...i need to make an appointment to take my bike in. i have starting and clutch problems as well

I've always heard that you should let you bike warm up to a minimum of 100 degrees before riding, and even then you should ride conservatively for a few minutes before beating the hell out of it. This gives the oil ample time to circulate throughout the engine and tranny internals, and should eliminate things like cold piston slap. If you're starting the bike up when the engine is still warm from previous riding, you should still give the oil around a minute to circulate, just to be on the safe side. After that, show all those bitches on other bikes why we ride Gixxers...

I usually wait till its over 100 degrees and then ride normally...meaning not hauling ass or hitting he throttle hard. Just ride around and warm up the tires a bit. When i hit around 150 to 160 then i give it hell. Remember that its cold outside now so be careful and warm up those tires first. If you have a 1000...take those slow turns in 2nd gear and not in first till your tires are warmed up properly because a little goose and make the tire break loose. Here's a good/bad example...

in the summer i wait till 130 cuz it doesnt take that long to get there. in the winter i wait till atleast 100. but i never get on it until its atleast 160 degrees. u will notice a difference in power response. but if its under 50 degrees outside and im riding, which isnt often, i try to stay off the hard throttle. the bike just doenst have the "umph" like it does when its over 50 degrees. maybe its in my head, b/c i know cold tires, cold roads, and fast speed is a no no.

talk about embarassing.. but the visual aid helped explain how touchy the liter bikes really are.. you barely even hear the engine start to rev when the back end kicks out.. good post

ah mine just started ticking tonight after only 250k's..on warm up(K6 750) i was stressin....lol

glad to hear it's normal...but but doesn't the ticking mean oil starvation?

my 97 never ticked??

also i have a bad habbit of holding the bike upright manually for a few minutes at start up....lol in belief that the oil will circuate better than on a lean on the stand....i'm i crazy????lol anyone do this too?

I posted a thread on this a few more pages in. The bikes at the dealer with the motor in pieces. take it in to make sure its normal, its under warranty. it wont hurt to have it listened to.

I just noticed this while riding mine for a while today. I was only wearing my skull cap helmet and the noise was absolutely abnoxious. It was a nasty rattling sound from the engine all the way down to the exhaust...is this normal? My bike is a K7 750 with about 2000 miles on it.

last night i was ridin my 01 750 that i got about 4 days ago. i missed second pretty bad but didnt over rev or anything. kicked it into second and the front wheel hopped up. after that at the next light i heard a ticking that sounded like a valve. do i have to have my valves adjusted or what should i do? does anyone know what could be wrong?

Ah the old why does it tick thread. These bikes tick because you have an extremely high spring rate in your valve springs. They have to be that way so you do not have valve float at high rpms. It is perfectly normal to hear a little tick especially if you aren't wearing a full face helmet like you should. I personally like to run premium gas in mine since gas companies put additives in to protect valve seats on high compression engines like ours.

Oh, and before anyone calls BS on the additive thing. I talked to the chem-E at one of my companies gasoline producing plants yesterday and they do infact put a lubricant in that does exactly this in high octane gasoline.

GSXR engines use a shim and bucket, so there isn't anything that magically slips or loosens out of adjustment (it's all gradual with wear). If it never made the sound before that happened and it doesn't sound right, then you might want to check them to see if it spit a shim out of the bucket. It doesn't happen often, but it has happened to a few bikes I've seen.

Yeah some noise is normal, especially on startup. The only time I would worry is if your bike suddenly starts making noises it's never made before, if it gets extremely loud all the time, if it loses power, etc. Otherwise just check the clearance in accordance to the manual (with maybe the exception of the 600 mile valve clearance check...never seen one that actually needs shimming after 600 miles).
