You would think Suzuki would be looking into it. Who knows it could have snapped after hitting the wall. I almost bought one this last weekend but ran out of time. Anything man made can have issues. People at the Honda forum (I own a Honda now) are running wild with it saying thats how they got it lighter by crappy welds and lighter material ? Funny to hear people speculate.

Well, tell them if the gixxer hadn't beat the cbr then the zx10 would have. I think the zx10 is the same weight or lighter than the gixxer according to the Sport Rider test.

Looks like it may have been a temperature issue, those bubbles at the bottom of the welds are commonly cause because the Temp is high enough to melt the weld wire but not high enough to penetrate the medal being welded. If multiple frames were welded at those same setting then all the welds will be just like that. That's a rough day for Suzuki

I just read an eye witness account on another site. He said that the bike was making the transition from the banking to the flats and washed out the front. He stated the bike was intact at this point. It wasn't until the bike hit the wall at 100mi/h that the frame cracked. I can't imagine that everyday aggressive street riding or a few slammed wheelies are going to snap the bike in half. In saying this, the welds do look like shit.

Any news on this frame issue? I want to pull the trigger on one but would like to hear something to ease my mind from Suzuki

that damage is all from a high speed wreck into a wall. There are plenty of pics floating around on the net, and there is not much of that bike left.

Well there is a lot to this story that has yet to be disclosed and Suzuki I bet is not happy with this guy to be putting up an article stating " APPARENT FRAME DEFECT MAY HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO CRASH. That try I guess gives a little room for error. I bet I'm not the only one that is concerned , bad timing .

Ditto man.
How many races have the 05's been in that nothing has happened? It is probably either a freek thing or it happened when the bike hit the wall. Check out these pics...why is he standing on the bike?

I'm not trying to bash Suzuki, I want to buy one. My concern is the quality of that weld, now i'm no welding expert so maybe we have one in here. His reasoning to say he does'nt know why the front in washed out may be his way of placing blame elsewhere instead of his riding? When you hit a wall things do break especially at 100mph.

i've had my 00 750 since it was brand new, and have raced it and stunted it and wrecked it. have heard of many wreck, and never seen anything like this before, even heard of other 05 1000s that have wrecked and nothing like this. This is most likely because the bike hit a wall at 1000mph, look at the front wheel, how often do you see all the spokes broken off a rim.

Amen brother. That bike was totally trashed. For comparison I wonder if anyone has pics of welds on older gixxers? I bet the supposed bad weld is completely normal for welding the extruded part to the cast part.

I'm no expert but I doubt there is a serious problem with the 'zuki frames. I mean c'mon...you smash a bike (Suzuki, Honda, Kawi, etc.) into a wall at over 100mph and see how it holds up.

The frames are excellent on the 05 1000and all gixxers for that matter->Nothing to worry about....with that amount of force-this is likely to happen

I can't believe people are acting like this. When you see the front wheel and all the rest of the bike wow that thing took a hard hit. Any bike would look like that.

Non-the-less the weld still had no penitration, the pictures dont lie. The bike may have lasted as long as you could expect any bike to last, but youll never know. Makes you wonder how many are out there like this. Looks almost like JBweld would have did the job that weld did.

We need to get an expert welder's opioion , but I don't think a mig weld penetrates as much?

I was a welder for almost 10 years, and welded on a nuclear grade applications. A mig can get just as much penitration as stick if you set it up right. Acutally its the best to use when it comes to aluminum. That is an aluminum frame of course and is really tricky to weld if you dont know what your doing. However, it is a machine or robot that does suzukis mass welding such as the welds we are looking at. When welding on any type of metal generally the weld can actually be stronger than the surrounding metal itself. But the crack or fracture points are right down the sides of the welds bead where extreme heat and cold meet. These weak points are caused when the molicules in the metal seperate and are not consistant with the molicule count in the metal that is being welded on. These fracture points or lines can actually be reduced by slowly preheating the metal thats about to be welded, then allow it to cool down very slowly by submerging it in lime powder when its complete. This keeps the metals in a more similar state and reduces the molicule differences or breakdown. I didnt weld on aluminum all that much in my past job, but have welded it on numerous occasions. You can really make a mess of things very quick if the temp is not perfect. but yes, the penitration should be very obvious in aluminum.

Yeah, You could make a mess real quick. I am just now learning how to mig aluminium. Ben welding for a long time. Stick amd Mig. Mig aluminium is a totally different thing. I cant figure why it keeps comming out black.

i t-boned a car at about 45mph and the frame cracked in the middle of the welds. i think that the forks being pushed in had to much pressure & snapped the frame at its weakest lnk, the welds
