Hi all,

I have an irritating issue, my 01 750 won't start when at operating temp. It's like it has a flat battery. When it's cooled down it will start. Any ideas?

Have you put a voltmeter on it to check what it is doing when you start it hot vs cold?

If you are saying that that the starter does not turn over the engine quickly when hot, here are the most common reasons.

1. Bad battery / not charging
2. Bad cables or cable connections or starter solenoid.
3. Failing starter.
4. Something binding in the engine when hot.

Lets start by using some correct terms and get some information.

Does the bike start like normal when cold?
What is the type of battery?
How old is the battery?
When if ever was a valve adjustment completed?
How many miles on the bike?
Does the bike crank slow or fast when the starter button is pressed?
Does the bike want to shut off when rolling to a stop sign?
Does the bike go to redline without issue?
Does the bike sound like its running on 3 cylinders?
Has there ever been a compression or leak down test performed?

If its a dead battery the engine will not turn over when the started button is pressed.

If its a dyeing battery then it could be slow or sluggish to crank (this could be due to age, manufacturer of the battery (always use OEM Yuasa), or a poor charging system draining the batter).

If the engine cranks but does not start then you most likely have tight valves which will not allow for the engine to start when hot.
