Relocated to Wisconsin

Hello all. Like the thread says I've just relocated to Wisconsin and looking for some information on the track riding scene. I'm in the Tomah/Sparta/La Crosse area. After some initial snooping I found 2 tracks within about 3.5 hrs, Blackhawk Farms and obviously Road America (Elkhart Lake to the old timers). Autobahn Country Club in Illinois is 5.5 hrs away and lastly there's Gingerman Raceway at 7 hrs and Gratten Raceway at 8.5 hrs, both in Michigan.

Anyone rode these tracks? Which trackday companies hold days here, and what kind of prices? Do the tracks themselves offer memberships, or is it basically trackdays only? Anything to know in particular about trackdays up this way? I have a k8 600 as my track bike, all stock components except for some EBC front rotors and pads, M4 slip-on exhaust and track plastics. At my pace that's all I need. Nothing is safety wired because it wasnt necessary with the two companies I rode with at my pace. I've ridden with Texas Motorcycle Academy at Harris Hill in San Marcos TX that's run by Craig Gleason (awesome guys). I've also ridden with RideSmart where I was recently promoted to level 2.
Anyone familiar with either of these?

I found a website, https://www.sportbiketrackguide.com/events-calendar/ , that seems like they can answer a lot of these questions and I'm going to scour it, but I've run across a lot of sites that are way out of date during previous searches so I'd figured I'd ask on the forums too.

Thx for any help.

Hi, I'm in WI too. SE WI.

I'd also post something similar on the XenForo forum, also known as 13x forum- it's a WERA racing forum.
There are many current and former 'trackies' up your way.

Welcome to WI- I think- after 10 years, some things I'm still not very happy on this state.

Thx for the suggestion. I just joined and posted the same question over there. 👍

I also found Gateway Motorsports Park in Madison Illinois is 7hrs away, as is Raceway Park of the Midlands in Pacific Junction, Iowa.

STT (sportbiketracktime) goes to all three, Road America, BHF and ACC. As well as Gingerman and Grattan.
MTD (Midwest track days) does BHF, Putnam
Motovid goes to BHF, Road America. Almost all on mondays this year. I might try this one out this year as Monday track days are usually lighter.

I've ridden mostly with STT. It's fine. Very popular on holiday trackdays. Sometimes it can be a traffic jam out there. Recently, there has been some anal control riders really turning the screws down in intermediate. Stuff like mandatory classes and pulling guys off the track for a session if they missed a class. (yeah, I was pulled off once. talked to the director and got let back on only to have the little tyrant stop me at the end of the session to bitch me out. Fuckin hell.)

I find the wera board more focused on racing, as they should be...
Plenty of guys on here can tell you what's what with riding trackdays.

The biggest difference is the track riding season comes and goes fast. basically the tracks are green, cold and damp/wet until May and then finish up late September/early October.

I rode intermediate with STT after everyone else had bumped to to advanced. Had one of them take me on basically a parade lap then into the pits (took nearly half a session) to say I didn't pass him at 6 feet. So when you're coaching two other riders, look back and see me coming, you drop them, up your pace, stay on the race line, then chop the throttle after the exit, I'm supposed to be over in the trash?

I raced at Road America, Blackhawk, and Gateway years ago with CCS. I do not like Gateway. It's basically a NASCAR oval with an infield and not the safest place. Have not been to Autobahn or Gingerman yet. A group I'm part of does private days at Grattan so I've been there a few times. Raceway Park of the Midlands is kind of my "home" track, within an hour and 15 minutes of my parents so I've been there the most. TrackAddix does the days there. But it was under 14' of water last month so jury is out if and when we will get to ride there this year.

I have ridden with STT a fair amount and have not heard of any mandatory classes for intermediate or even novice except for the rider's meeting. I guess if the day is not going well, they may call another meeting for a "come to Jesus" talk. Maybe it is regional thing. I'm in the SE.

A couple of years ago at VIR, as we were on the grid to out for a session and the head cheese had us shut down, helmets off and we got some talking to

N2 used to require a coach to wave you by in intermediate, but dropped that this year. They still insist on left side passes only, which is smart.

The first session a couple of weeks ago the coach was giving a pretty slow tow and the student pits in at the last turn. I come around the turn and plan on finishing mid-track as I see the coach far left. As I'm mid point the coach is hardly on the gas into the straight and I would have had to brake to not pass him which would not have been smart at that point so .... away I went.

He called me out about the right side pass at the end of the session, but I shared the video with him a few days later and he could see the situation he put me in. He was cool after that.

Iíve ridden with STT on/off for 10 years. Never did i have classes in intermediate. They announced at the AM riders meeting classes would be mandatory after first session and I fully intended to go.

Get on the track, adrenaline is pumping, thinking about riding and being smooth and hitting your apexes and lines, adrenaline dump when you pull off and it totally slipped my mind.

I go grid up next session and I get pulled off and ordered to sit along with about 5 others...

The northern director for STT is a totally awesome dude. He understood and let me get back on track that session... made the rest of the classes that morning even the non mandatory ones.

I actually enjoy the classroom sessions. Being the novice that I am, I notice that the classroom sessions will remind me of things that I have allowed to slip out of my focus, and I will pick up tips to help with my markers, lines, etc...

STT did mandatory classes for Intermediate the one time I rode intermediate with them at Autobahn. At Putnam, I rode with them in the I group for 3 sessions and then got an A evaluation and bumped up. If they offer a class, mandatory or not, take it. Don't be too proud to learn something. Take a drink and a snack and get your money's worth out of them!
