tigerblade I'm planning to put antifreeze in my bikes this weekend.

koth442 Not sure when the next TD is at this point. I'm out for RA in Oct. Maybe Little Tally in November or Jennings in December.

rv6john Just a couple of K6 gsxrs waiting to pit out. My friend John in front.

Great day at VIR yesterday. Misty and cool the first session but the track was dry all day. I can't say I did my best job riding but kept it up and out of the weeds so I'll call it a good day.

apiazza Like wise. When I had my big crash it took me a long time to really get confidence again. It took the help of coaches and faster friends pushing me to find the groove. This season I turned that corner after struggling all last year.

tigerblade Glad you're working through it. Been there myself. It's very much a mental activity.

Chuckster Beer and pizza last night to celebrate the end of a good season. My wife loves to sleep in on the weekends and I sat on the porch with my coffee this morning and reflected on the last year and a half. There's far more to track riding than just good equipment and skill....

I'm 42 years old. I remember being in my 20s and only needing a good nights sleep the night before and the night after. Two and a half years ago, I made a commitment to go to the gym 3 days a week so I could be fit enough to enjoy a day at the track. 2016 I had a tax issue from my side job and couldn't afford to do any trackdays. We were also building a house, so it just wasn't in the cards. 2017 saw me back on the track, and I got 5 days in that year. It was a good year, and I made good advances. 2018 comes around and I start my year at NCM. Day was really going good until session 7 where I destroyed my bike and as I would later learn, my confidence.

I continued to work out all of 2018 and spent my TD budget on rebuilding the bike. First TD back of 2019 was on my home track, but it was a new surface. New track, "new" bike, and I just felt good being back. My lap times were down and I had a lot of things to blame. Just being rusty, lack of "proof" of the rebuild, and the green surface. The biggest thing was the front tire wear. I had a suspension problem. Just another thing to blame. Second day out and I invested in professional help. Got the front sorted out and the tires were wearing good. Saw my lap times creeping closer to where I had been. Day three was at NCM. It was a headgame just to be back at the place where I crashed. I wanted to go fast and prove to myself it wasn't a headgame. Near the end of the day I got bumped down, which just deflated the confidence I thought I had.

I was introduced to Ryan and Blake (the coach that bumped me). Both engaged with me in discussion over the next few days and pointed out some things to me. I had lost my fundamentals. I started this post by saying there's far more to riding. Equipment are the tools, fitness is the means, but having your head in the game is far more important than either one. Technique, focus on breathing and staying relaxed. Seeing the track and using the markers. Listening to the feedback of tires. All these things are the equation of being fast. It seems I had forgotten that.

I would say yesterday was really my first day back. The three days earlier in the season my bike was there, and my body was there. Hell, even my heart was there. My head just wasn't. I won't make that mistake again....

Chuckster Guess who found their confidence today! Worked with a coach during session 2. Really worked on BP timing and my downshifts, and in my head I had the attitude "I'm doing this, or hanging it up". I just trusted my equipment and turned it up. Average pace dropped 5 seconds a lap. The crazy thing, I wasn't pushing. I was just focusing on the things that got me bumped down at NCM.

Only negative of the day is that I made a bad pass. Going into T1, I was trying to setup on the outside of a guy that was killing me in the straights. As I started to get by, he swung over and instead of backing off, I forced the pass and we clicked bars. Entirely on me for a bad pass, but he shouldn't have swung to the outside at the very end.

Racerxxxgsxr1000 I've only been to the track twice this year. I need my life to slow down after this house build, Im about stressed.
Next year, I'm gonna step up track!

Chad is trying to get me to go to RA. My finances are a little tight. I just sold a couple bits from that GSXR partout which might give me the boost I need.. we'll see.

Chuckster Last weekend for Putnam this year. I'll be out there Saturday only. Back to Adv since it's a track I know really well, and working with a coach on all the even numbered sessions. Been watching my old videos and working on my body timing in the garage. Sounds funny, but that should be a big help. Looking like 70/85 for the day with slight chance of a pop-up thunderstorm.

Burch and Michael are riding today and you may catch them if you get there late afternoon. I'm guessing they will want to boogie out pretty soon after the last session as they are driving back tonight I think.

Red Mazda sportage thing with a single axle open trailer. Look for Burch's ZX6r. Black with the sharks teeth.
I didn't see them, but I did run into Jeremiah and his friend (David I think?)

Yeah, it was a hot one, that's for sure. It was an absolute hoot though! The track is so smooth it's a little surreal. People give Laguna Seca credit for the "massive" elevation change(s). That's some bullshit. The Corkscrew may be steeper and taller, but Laguna is up and then down. Barber is a roller coaster going up and down many many times. It's awesome.

I set down a 1:45 according to the instructor who I assume had a lap timer.

When's Road A John?

apiazza Here are a few laps of full course at the end of Tuesday. I'm pretty happy. I finally started to understand the oak tree corner, but still way too slow through the beginning portion of it.

apiazza Hell of a couple days at VIR. As always a great event. My pace dramatically improved riding with fast guys and pushing myself to carry their lines through technical sections. I wish my lap timer worked. Something must have happened in the update when it was in italy but it no longer has VIR on it and I cant figure out why. I'm pretty positive it worked in the past. I have video from tuesday on full course that I'll clock to get an idea for there at least, but stupid me didnt run it at all on monday. I also have no data to compare my full course times against, especially now that they are running the super tight chicane.

I ran 180/60 dunlop slicks for the first time. My supercorsa sc had great grip but I was running 180/55 and I have to say the extra profile dramatically increased the feel and confidence on the edge of the tire. I can't believe I waited this long to try it. If you track your bike and it's a 180, I highly suggest the 60 over the 55. I wanted to try the slicks because they actually worked out cheaper, so why not. The dunlop rear is also flipable which is a huge plus, in my opinion, considering all the tracks I ride are right handed. I can probably get at least an extra day out of the tire.

I'm getting pumped for Barber this Sunday!!

Also, I made a budget plan to race WERA next season. Probably not the whole season, but maybe a few rounds.

Hastings Aug 31-Sept 1 2019

Rained most of Saturday morning. A few guys went out here and there but not a lot of activity. In doing another check over the bikes, noticed the shock on the 750 appears to be seeping so didn't want to chance anything without getting it checked out first. The SV had street tires on it so went ahead and had the Bridgestone slicks mounted that I'd bought just before I sold the bike, sent with the bike, then got back when I repurchased.

I hadn't ridden the SV since buying it back and actually haven't ridden a motorcycle at all since last fall. I followed a coach for a few laps to learn the lines and proper place to signal for pit out. Hastings is a very fun track and can't wait to get back there with more of a comfort level in the bike and myself. The fastest part of the track isn't really the main start/finish straight (4th gear for me) but rather a VIR-like kinked section including turns 3 and 4. Ran a few sessions Saturday afternoon and more on Sunday morning. TrackAddix does a shortened Sunday from 9-1 with open track, no sessions. It actually works pretty well. Got to pick up some things from the fast guys on 300s/400s which are great at this track since it seems to reward corner speed. There are a couple of fun spots where you take two turns as one and great when you get it right.

Unfortunately my sole repair on my Sidis didn't hold but I thankfully found that out before trying them on the track so used my OLD pair. Also found a gap in my Alpinestars gloves. I've read about A* quality as of late and these are even the higher spec GP Tech but I think I'll be replacing them before next season.

The 750 has spoiled me with the quickshifter so had to remind myself to give the throttle a blip when upshifting. Took a while to really trust the feel of the SV again but I think I got there. Also lost a bar end. 😬

In all, good weekend.

rv6john "Nothing could be finer then to be in Carolina..."

Great day at Carolina Motorsports park yesterday. Riding with 11 locals plus another half dozen others that I know was a treat. Upper 80s, sunshine, a nice breeze and relatively low humidity made the day. Even with clear skies we missed the early morning fog so the track was dry and warm the first session!

The best part is everyone had a great time and brought shiny bikes back home.

JCW great weather in the midwest! finally a trackday not in the 100 or wet.
tire wear is good, bike running well, nothing is falling off.

im still slow but having fun!

Only thing bad is I have a coolant leak somewhere. Reservoir empties itself over the course of the day. I hope I didn't hole the radiator.

apiazza My bike is loaded up in my buddy's (and my soon to be mine) trailer ready for VIR on monday. Pretty pumped because I'll also finally be able to ride with most of them.

I'll still have to dump coolant in the winter. It's only about 10F warmer here in than MO, sometimes less. I'm just within driving distance of warmer climates haha.

koth442 I couldn't see latest posts until just now too. Hence my "test?" post above....

Chuckster They're showing up now. The coach I was working with during the last two sessions said he didn't see any big issues. The only thing I changed was how I downshifted. I switched from blipping to slipping. He sent me some video while following me and I can see my BP has suffered a lot. My lines are loose, but I'm not trying to stay on a 10" wide race line either. I know what I need to focus on. I also went back to my old footage. I already knew I lost 5 seconds at my home track. I lost 8-10 at NCM. I know my head is a big part of that, but I think I'm going to have Carr throw it on the dyno and just do pull or two to see how much is my head and how much is the bike. I was 20mph slower in the Corvette curves section and I don't think I lost that much just on corner exit.
