Inquiring about purchasing a buddies bike, 06 gsxr 600 with around 13,500. Anything to really look out for? Its been down once but the scratches are so light, said the rectifier has been changed. Seems to idle alright

The only common issue I am aware of is the charging system. Put a voltmeter on the battery with bike running at 5000rpm. If voltage is between 14 and 15.5 it’s working.

You may need to factor in cost of new sprockets and chain. I’d be changing all the fluids, plugs and filters. If the tyres are old or worn replace them too. In other words, just stuff you would do with any used bike.

If you can, remove the fairings and check the frame for cracks. If there is a crack, walk away. Check the forks for oil residue. The seals might be leaking, though at the bikes age it would be worth having the oil and seals replaced.

You are getting a 13 year old bike and it can have age issues like any 13 year old bike.

BTW, I have a 2006 750 and it has been a wonderful bike.

Hes asking 4, figured maybe i could get it for maybe 3500, and have a decent bike for a while

Prices vary a lot depending on the location and the season.

If the bike is clean, except for the minor scratches, and has decent tires $4k would be a fair price in my area. $3500 just being a better deal.

I define "clean" as a pretty original bike (plastics, paint, etc) with no stupid mods and just normal signs of use.

Having just this past September come across an '06 GSX-R600 on Craigslist (for $900! It was a mess with a dubious engine to boot), the Missus reminded us of the cardinal rule of used motorcycle buying:
Tires. $500.
Probably a chain. Another $150. While I've never had one of my own chains go less than 40K, not many people do chain maintenance. Her SV650S's chain was ruined at only 5k- the guy said "I didn't know you had to lube a chain."
What happens when a chain fails at speed is pretty terrifying.
I had trouble on our 600 with the cam position sensor and the cooling system, requiring a thermostat and radiator cap. Again, maintenance done wrong or not at all.
But tires. Not everyone knows that tires have a service life of only five years before they harden and lose performance. That especially goes for bikes stored outdoors. There's a date code on the sidewall in an oval showing the week and year of manufacture. Personally, I won't go past six years even on nice-looking tires.
I recently got an old Concours for a project. The tires were dated 3 1/2 years ago. But the bike was parked outside the whole time. The rear tire, especially, feels like it's been Vaselined. Scary.
