I didn't watch it until this morning. I was careful not to look at sites like 13X until I watched it live/replay.
Wow.
Unfortunate for Escalante, whom I thought was looking good to win it.

The way I saw the Herrin/Escalante thing, is that is was still Herrin's job to keep clear, and not cause contact.
He was behind, and was not all the way ahead when he mad contact and took him out.
The announcers said at the contact, he was ahead. He was not all the way ahead and came from behind. Yes, they gave him a 6 place penalty on the re-start with 10 laps to finish. He quickly erased most of that before the first turn though.

Your thoughts?

I just found this on the 13x forum, and I agree with this. And no, I didn't post it.

This is my opinion, not fact, although I am right. Herrin did not safely complete the pass even though he was a wheel up. Therefore, he was responsible for Richie going down. A grid penalty is a chicken shit penalty in this scenario. It isn't even a slap on the wrist, it just makes it look like the officials did something effective. A real penalty would have been a finish position or time penalty assessed at the end of the race.

And this reply to the on above I posted. Again, a 13x forum poster- not my post. I agree though. FWIW

Yep!!! He literally was in the lead before they completed the first lap of the restart. As mentioned before, a time penalty should have been implemented.
Horrible call officiating
Then many seasoned racers say racing incident, should be no penalty.
Then this:
Even Herrin said that was the line they have been using the whole race. He just wanted to see if you could go up the inside of it. Richie was on the line they had been using all race, he didn't change lines. Punishment was appropriate, and it was punishment. On a restart starting back in 7th wasn't a problem this time, but we have all seen how that can turn out differently if you are back in the pack and someone makes a mistake.

I haven't actually heard Richie or M4 say anything. I'm sure Chris Ulrich will write a fucking novel about it at some point though. If the roles were reversed, Herrin would be on Instagram in tears right afterwards.

I read an article on Road Racing World this morning. Richie said, "There was a racing move, another rider touched my bike, and I crashed." This is the only article I've found so far that actually quotes Richie. You have to scroll way down to find it though.

Chuck, what are your thoughts on that 'pass'?

Looking at some of these passes which were hard passes, sometimes resulting in contact, but didn't result in a crash. I wonder what specifically happened that brought Richie down?

Looked to me as though Ritchie lost the front as a result of the bump. He tried a small stand up, it obviously wasn't enough, or soon enough.
Tuff situation, and one I don't think or don't plan to find myself in, even doing a track day.

Looks like a regular Mm93 pass to me... lol

Yeah it was unfortunate he hit the bars. If it were body to body contact they both probably ride and battle on.

Late pass imo.. didn't quite hold his inside line iirc. But I'd have to look at it again

How bout the ol man Josh Hayes???? He's my hero.

Man I miss JD beach.

I think the important things here are boot to lever clearly puts Herrin in front. The contact was actually Ritchie turning into Herrin. Post contact, Herrin clearly held his line. I've had sketchier contact at TDs.....
