I was in the market for a new Lid. Figured I'd go to my Local Cycle Gear store since I wanted to ride that day and I'm an Instant Gratification type of guy. I had never bought anything from cycle gear ever before, not online nor in an actual store.

So I tried on a couple different ones. And settled on a Sedici Carbon Fiber Helmet. It fit snug in the store but thats how a helmet is supposed to fit. And I was satisfied with the price. So Off I went home to get my new helmet ready for its maiden voyage. Well an hour into wearing it The back of my head felt like it was going to explode. The pressure from the helmet was so severe that I had a splitting headache. I knew the helmet was snug, but turns out after it was on my head for longer than the 3 minutes i tried it on in the store it was putting so much pressure on my skull that I couldnt ride with it.

I figured cycle gear had some policy about returns. Most companies do. I Didnt think they would tell me that there was NOTHING they could do for me. Im an honest guy, I always have been. So when the guy at the store asked me if I wore it I told him that I Rode with it for an hour. He told me that there wasnt anything he could do for me because it was worn and "I Can't resell a worn helmet"

I understand that the company has a policy on helmet returns. I run a Business myself and we have guidelines as well for when customers try and return things. I just dont understand how they expect you to know how a Helmet really fits/feels until your out there riding your motorcycle. This isnt a pair of jeans or a T shirt your trying on for a date. It's Safety Equipment that protects you while your out there riding. Things feel different on a bike, and I'm not gonna stand there in the store with a helmet on for an hour to see if it hurts my head.

Maybe I'm crazy...I just dont think this is good Business.

I'll never buy anything else from cycle gear ever again

Damn that sucks, bro

Try a dif cycle gear or on a dif day when said dbag isn't working and just say never worn? I wouldn't let that go

After I found out that I can save $25 by ordering my oil and filter from amazon, cycle gear has become a place to try things on before I order them online

Maybe call district, I'm sure that lid wasn't cheap

Sorry, but I can't offer you much empathy.

I'm assuming that you chose to only wear the helmet for 3 minutes in the store before buying it. Next time, put it on and wear it around the store for 30 minutes.

I don't know how long you have been riding, but you don't need to be on the bike to check helmet fit.

Maybe the only fault of CycleGear is not training their salespeople better on proper helmet fit. If you go to an Arai dealer with a correctly trained tech, you will be amazed at the effort they go to get you the proper fit. The last time I was at my local dealer, the guy spent over 1/2 hour making sure I had the right model, shape and padding in the helmet.

I'm guessing that you have the same problem I have, a long oval shaped head. I've only found a few helmets that fit me well. And yes, I've been to my local Cyclegear, tried on a few helmets and knew within minutes the shape would not work. They all had a lot of pressure on my forehead. (more round shape)

I'm guessing since you wore the helmet they could not even re-sell it as used.

I suggest you ask the store manager to give you a discount on a replacement helmet, if you find one that fits, and sell your almost new helmet on craigslist. At least you'll minimize your loss.

As you mentioned "It's Safety Equipment that protects you while your out there riding." Next time resist the impulse of carbon bling and make sure it fits.

Ive been riding for 10 years. This isnt my first helmet. Every helmet I have ever bought fit and felt great as soon as I tried it on.

It feels great for like 45 mins then starts to hurt really bad...Thats not normal to me. It wasnt the carbon fiber bling that made me buy the helmet...I dunno what that even means. It felt good i liked the fit and I bought it.

I think its shitty business to tell someone you cant do anything for them at all because you wore it for an hour. It literally still smells brand new inside.

I'd still try and bring it back on a dif day, esp if it smells new and used want to exchange it

I suggested the same thing and even thought we would try YOUR local CG when down there but today is the last of the 7 day return policy.

I see Johns point of view and Sixxxxers BUT I completely agree with Sixxxxer on the fact your should make it right. I run a 8.5m/year retail box and its not possible to stick to the black and white of the return policy AND make customers happy. You protect your assets and your margin best you can and also make them happy.

In NJ that helmet can be sold again, no regs against it. Hell CG will take boots back and resell them inside 30 days!

Ya I'd be pretty pissed off as a paying customer. CG isn't some ma and pa shop, they're corporate franchise and should no doubt have done something.

At least bring it and ur receipt to maybe swap for a larger size. Be like I'm out of town, just really tried it on again and need one size up.

Now we're gonna be invaded by new members talking about the great deals and parts they got from cycle gear :lol:

Can't speak for cycle gear but I know that when ordering a lid online, I usually just wear it around the house for a bit without taking any stickers off or anything just in case it doesn't fit right. I have never had an issue with sending it back when doing that but most businesses won't take them back if you actually have worn the item while riding.

I thought Cycle gear had a hassle free return policy?? that sucks
don't make sense to me, everywhere I go they display size small helmets. then you ask for your size and they go get one from inventory, so that one you tried is technically worn right??
and if you wear it for 3 minutes or 30 minutes its now used..
so how do you know if the one you have isn't used or been worn by someone else?? I would tell them that

I was going to let Sixxxxer update you guys but he doesnt come on fast enough for me.

The Manager called him today randomly and said "he felt bad" and will let Sixxxxer exchange the helmet for a bigger size on Monday.

I would like to point out a fun fact. The manager owns two bikes (Ive met and talked to him), one of which is a GSXR. I forget his name but if your on here and thats why you did this, its ok to say it on here. No one will judge you and in most ppls eyes you did the right thing!

For reference here is the return policy on helmets right off the Cycle gear website:

7-Day No Hassle Helmet Exchange
A motorcycle helmet is arguably the most important piece of safety gear you can buy, and proper fit is extremely important. Helmets may be exchanged or returned within 7 days from the date of receipt. Helmets must be in unused condition with all the original packaging, accessories and original box. In order to protect our customers, exchanged helmets may not be ridden in, dirty, scuffed, chipped or damaged in any way. No returns/exchanges on helmets after 7 days from the date of receipt.

To Return by Mail:
Simply print out our exchange form, box up your helmet, and ship it back to our returns center. Once we receive the return we will process it within 48 hours. If you are in the continental US and exchanging for size or proper fit, give us a call at 1-800-292-5343 to have a pre-paid shipping label emailed to you.

To Exchange in Store:
If you would like to return your helmet in person, just bring it and your invoice to any Cycle Gear location across the country and one of our associates will be happy to assist you in processing the refund or helping you select the perfect item for an exchange.
All I can say is that if I was returning a helmet I would take it in and if asked tell them no I did not ride in it (If I felt the interior was still like new with no signs of sweat and odor). Then let the store representative decide from a visual inspection on whether they think it is returnable or not.

Their policy is fair but like any policy its a blanket policy to cover most scenarios.

But I know people some nasty ass head and I would not touch a helmet that they had even tried on for two seconds.
On the same note just because you took a short ride does not mean the helmet is filthy and unsalable.

Hello,

Too bad about your head-ache, & not being able to exchange the lid...But all is not so bad really...I've had quite a few helmets too over the years, & they do stretch-in & loosen-up significantly, given a chance.

No pain, no gain LOL !

Alternatively, you could consider a hair-cut, & opening some of the ventilation features the helmet may have. This may help the pain threshold out a little. It may also be possible to remove or re-position or change some of the foam behind the lining on the lower portion of the helmet.-I'd say this may be slowing-up the blood-flow to your skull etc etc.

It's worth trying out, & you might just have a great helmet to keep you going for a few years.

I had a helmet that did that to me, Made me dizzy and felt like I was going to pass out from the pressure on the back of my head, I forgot what brand it was I think an HJC. Never bought another one, Shoei's fit me great and allow for room should I decide to stuff my hair inside so thats all I buy now.

Never bought another one, Shoei's fit me great and allow for room should I decide to stuff my hair inside so thats all I buy now.
HJCs are terrible,IMO. I bought a Lorenzo replica wore it for one ride, put the visor sticker back on and shipped it back....shoei is the best for my head shape as well. The Bell I wear at the track sucks compared to my shoei but it serves it's purpose.

I have two HJC RPHA-10s and like them just fine. Must work fine with my head shape. Have had mostly Shoei in the past. Might try a Bell next.

The Bell and HJC fit similarly. If you're gonna buy a Bell go a size smaller than what you normally wear. If the shoei fits you good, the bell will fit you weird.
