I've got a GSXR 1000 K6 with about 11,000km on the clock. The problem I have is the bike intermittently won't start after I put the key in turn it to the ON position. What I've noticed on the dash is that the immobilizer and oil light flash at me, the temperature gauge shows F1, and when I pull in the clutch and hit the starter button the starter motor ticks over quite happily but it's as if the bike is out of petrol and therefore won't start. If I turn the key back and forth a couple of times it resolves the problem but I shouldn't have to that.

I've taken the bike back to the dealer about 6 times but they are unable to resolve the problem. What they have done is to replace the ignition barrel which resulted in me getting a new set of keys, which lead to a replacement petrol cap and pillion seat lock. They dealer then couldn't get the new keys reprogrammed to the bikes ECU so a new one was installed.

The dealer is loosing interest as he has said that with warranty jobs he only gets paid for the time he spends replacing parts and not for any diagnosis work. He also says the Suzuki Australia refuses to replace any more parts on the bike until the problems occurs when one the dealers mechanics goes to start it and it plays up. Given the problem happens once a week, or about one every 20 starts that seems a little inconvenient for me to be without my bike for that long.

Does anyone have any words of wisdom to share here as to what the solution to the bikes starting problem is?

i havent had to work on either of the k6's in my house but it could be something as simple as a faulty connection, corroded battery leads, or it could be something else.

i would suggest finding another suzuki dealer that will honor your warranty that is close enough for you to ride or trailer the bike to. we had to leave a yamaha with the dealership for about a week so they could ride it and see the problem for themselves. after that the bikes been fine, but we had taken the bike back about 5 times before we left it with them.

Being that the bike has an immobilizer on it this could be tough for any of the american members to answer as the u.s. bikes dont have that feature. But leaving it at the dealer seems to be the only course of action, intermittent problems suck for the obvious reasons and also the fact that most dealers will dismiss the problem right away if it doesnt occur. Sorry that i cant be much help but i hope everything gets taken care of.

do some research on FI codes, you have a FI code, Fault indicator, if you look hard enough, you can find out how to put the bike in dealer mode, and find out what the code is and know exactly what the problem is

when you turn the key without pushing the start button you should hear a faint buzz tak eoff your helmet and put your ear next to the tank, it will last about a second or two.

Suzuki has reviewed the video. They think the problem is the Ford Territory key which I have on my key ring, which has an immobilizer chip in it, is interfering with the Gixxer. Suzuki also mentioned that some of their car dealers have had other manufactures car keys upset the immobilizer on Suzuki cars, but never on a motorcycle.

I called Ford and they confirmed that the Territory does have a chip in the key; the service manager said that he has a lot of clients with multiple car/bike keys on the same key ring and has never heard of the problem with Fords. Ford reckons the chances of their key upsetting my Suzuki motorcycle is a long shot.

As it turned out Suzuki were spot on. If you review the video I posted you'll see a key with a blue spot on the top of it, that’s the Ford key. What I did was I took the Ford key off my key ring and laid it flat against the face of the ignition then inserted the Gixxer key and the electronics went haywire just like in the video. Take the Ford key away and it starts OK.

It only every played up when the Ford key was in a certain position when I inserted the keys. This scenario never happened at the Dealer because I just gave them the bike key and took my house keys and the Ford key with me.

The solution obviously is to take the Ford key off my key ring, which is OK as I only drive the car every few months. It’s funny and yet frustrating that the solution was right under my nose.
