Hi all
Bit of a forum lurker, but I thought I'd share a mod I did on bike that didn't cost a whole lot of money.
I bought some second hand zx6r clip ons 50mm from a 03-04 but 05-06 will fit to.
Anyway these fit on really well and removed what I think was like holding on to a wheel barrow.
These clip ons clear the fairings and give a more flatter and wider grip like a more modern bike.
I did have to drill a couple of holes for the switch gear to fit and also had to make a little bracket for the brake reservoir.
Overall I'm really happy with the results, making alot more comfortable but with out losing that sports bike feel.

When I did my putting the clip ons above the top triple, then you can angle them a bit different, and gives you a 2" rise, for free basically.

Early in my track days, a coach mentioned that I should open up the bars as I'm a big guy with wide shoulders. I had Vortex clipons so it was easy and opened them up so they just cleared the fairings at full lock. It was much more comfortable.

My street gsxr still had the OEM clipons and I was always annoyed on tight right turns as the throttle hand was so close into the tank making it harder to modulate the throttle. Looking at the clipons, I spied a metal lug that is locked into the upper triple not allowing any adjustment. I slid the clip on down and whacked off those lugs with a Dremel. The wider bars are even better on the street!

Hi Todd

Putting the clip ons above top triple isn't the same as what I've done.
By putting them above the triple your lowering the front end and changing motorcycle geometry, also the original clips ons have a more extreme angle compared to the flatter zx6r ones.

Kind regards Rich

Well no Shiite Rich. They recommend pushing the forks thru the triples at least 6-8mm anyways. But you knew that? So a few more MM's does really change it much.
Before my first track day on this bike (K5 1000), I put them back to the stock area.

As far as the angle, when they're mounted above, I can bolt them any angle I want to and It gives a nearly 2" rise over the stock position, And the little bit of added geometry 'turn-in' was nice also!

People pay big bucks for those tangent tube or low offset clip ons.

I picked up a renthal pair

They move the bars closer to the rider. My rev3 throttle lines are actually a little long now.

Hi Todd

I don't know in which way you read my reply but, I I felt like you was biting at me and at the same time call me out.
I not going lock horns with you and nor was i meaning to disrespect you.

Well there's many ways to skin a cat,
I don't know what the roads are like around your area, but if I lowered the front end like you have, I'd bottom the belly pan out.
Rising the rear end has the same effect for turning.

I just putting out there for information, many people are happy with the original clip ons which is great.
But for those who aren't my experience is there as an alternative.

There's a wise old Englander saying - "new forum members shouldn't try to teach the old dogs to suck eggs" ;)

I think this is a great cheap alternative to a popular mod for racers.
Good for people that want a little shorter reach to the bars and/or more leverage.
there's a slightly less wise american saying... I think he was just yankin ur chain. ;)

I was leaning towards dirt bike bars but I think I’ll try this first

No offense taken. I’m sorry I was a little brash with my comment I guess. Lots of ways to skin a cat. Enjoy your ride.

to be honest, the first K5 L bike I bought in 2017 had a Roland sands upper triple tree and rental handlebars! That didn’t last long however and I sold the handlebars. I think I also sold the triple tree can’t remember. I’ll have to look for in my garage.
Hello and welcome, nice first post, with pics and lots of likes. I don't think anyone here meant to sound harsh/ brash/ rash/ offensive unless if it is REALLY OBVIOUS.

Stock clipons are for tucked in and maintaining that screwdriver grip, but it hampers 'normal' riding especially low speed maneuvers.

Thanks for sharing.

Good Day my friend,
Thanks for this information for the clip ons modification. perfect offset to compensate for that angle. I was looking to buy some expensive clipons because of wrist pain for my k8 gsx r1000. This is what I was looking for . Finally someone actucally performed right job . Just wondering how did you managed to fill those holes to line up in the triple tree play because gsx-R has those nubs that goes in the hole . I just ended up ordering a used set from ebay.
