Im new to this board just wanted to say whats up and if any one has any info. i recently purchased a 2005 gsxr 600 with a 750 motor in it the motor is legit and so is the frame. I have a nj salvage title for the bike for the frame it has been fully assembled and is in perfect riding condition. do you know how i go about getting it to a clean title when i go to register it for NY?

To the best of my knowledge, you can't turn a junk title into a clean one. The only thing you could do is buy a used frame with a clean title, and put your motor and all that other jazz into that frame.

You can ride a junk title and insure a junk title. When you take it to be registered they will have to look at the bike and verify the frame VIN matching with the title though. That's what happened to me when I registered my salvage title bike.

i got ya. well i only paid 1500 for the bike and like i said its a 600 frame and everything is 750 and its in mint condition so i guess even if i still cant get a clean title i still made out. i appreciate the quick response now i need to get a nice slip on exuast it has a D and D and it cant stand it.

Interesting. I thought you would first have to take the salvage bike to a shop that DMV recognizes and have them repair it in order for you to have it registered and ridden on the street with a salvage or rebuilt title?

Also NoAllies when you say they have to look at the bike and verify the vin matching with the title who actually does that and how does the process go? I'm actually interested in this as I a planning on buying another bike with a salvage title and trying to registere and ride it on the street.

Haha, the one that's probly the farthest away from NY in America. I went to my local one in Anchorage, AK. It's actually a DMV "express". You walk in and walk right up to a DMV agent, pay $20 (the "express fee", so you don't have to wait in line) and that person came right outside with me, checked the VIN, said "whoa, nice bike...why's this a junk title again"...laughed, then went inside and pushed all my paperwork through.

lol. Wow i which dmv here in NY is that efficient, quick, and easy to work with. If i bring a salvage bike and title for them to look at they'll probably just laugh then start getting loud.

first you need to go to DMV and pay them around $150 after you do that you need to call the state trooper get a day so he can inspect your bike after that he gives you some kind of clean paper you take it to DMV and they will give you rebuilt title or by mistake clean title. just try.

There is a difference between Salvage paperwork and a salvage title. Every state is a little different with salvage certificates. But for the most part a totaled out bike gets issued a salvage certificate which requires you go through an inspection process then upon approval they issue a branded title that says salvage rebuilt somewhere on it. Once that title is issued its just like any other title other than the rebuilt branding on it. Some states also issue non rebuildable, or parts only salvage certificates, which means that VIN # can never be titled as rebuilt or registered for on road use. There are ways around the branding of the title, but its really not worth the hassle unless your trying to cob together high end vehicles and rip people off.

I tried to do this once. I first had to fill out a wad of paper work than bring it to a DMV licensed inspection station. The inspection is $200.00. The bike needs to be completley stock just like it came out of the factory with no mods. Than you can register and insure it for personal use as long as it passes. Or sell it to someone in florida and than buy it back. It will have a clean FL title since they do not do inspections than you can register it in NY with a clean title

Actually there is some thing called "washing" a title but it is illegal, and a felony if caught.

I am in the process of this whole shabang! So I bought a 02 gsxr 600 from a dude and he told me it was registered. So my dumbass bought it he gave me some paperwork. I whent to the dmv and told them I am trying to register the bike. They said it wasnt filled out correctly and I needed the guys information. I never got a hold of the guy again and told the dmv I couldnt get his info...so they gave me some paperwork to fill out. They told me that I have to get it inspected by a police station or something like that. The DMV is charging me a little less than a grand to effin register it and all that crap...I live in the bay area in california...this happened two years ago haha still not registered. I was a noob on bikes and didnt know much about them. While ive been thinking about paying the dmv to do this, I have been encountering issues with the bike. This past month i have been stripping the bike down and it seems to me that this guy bought it salvaged or stolen and has rebuilt but has done the shittiest job. So now i dont know what to do.....

Run the VIN..if not stolen, part it out and buy smarter next time
