Hey there,..I'm new to the board. Thought i'd say hi and start off my first post with this...

..I have a 2001 gsxr 600 and the stock damper seems to have a lot of play in it. I'm not talking about the knuckle that attaches to the fork, but rather the allen bolt that holds the center of the damper to the steering head. Is there supposed to be any slack there? Thanks

the play is up and down,.. if it were side to side,.it obviously wouldn't be too functional. But if this amount of up and down movement is allowed, why wouldnt there be some kind of rubber piece there? The damper just rocks freely against the allen head.

yea that up and down movement is normal.

Best Aftermarket steering damper, I would say is the Scotts. I've had one for 3 years now and still love it.

Does the Scott mount in the stock location?

No, the scotts mounts on your triple clamp, right where your steering stem nut goes. You can check it out here, scottsperformance.com
