Todd's K6 Liter Track bike - new to me

5379 Views 83 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Todd_Sails
In an effort to somewhat preserve my K5 Literbike, I bought a K6 Literbike just over an our away from me.
This bike is well set up by the original owner.
In a nutshell- the Original owner had crashed it on the street, Bought it back from salvage and built it into a failry well sorted track bike.
The original owner had had the motor worked on and he posted in this for sale thread that it dynoed then at 179 RWHP.

Here's the original For Sale thread from STT forum, it sold then in June, 2016.

Then my PO sold it to me 2 days ago.
He had mods to it as well.
I guess the motor went in 2017, cause he had the motor completely rebuilt by Turn One Racing. PO says he thinks it put down 175 RWHP after that build.
In this invoice, it also states 'degreeing cams'! Maybe it has those changeable cam sprockets too.

This is from my sellers STT post:

Bike comes with some spares/extras including:
  • Extra set of wheels
  • Champion generator + Chickenhawk tire warmers
  • New Suzuki clutch kit (doesn't need it yet, but have the kit)
  • Pitbull Axle pins
  • Front + Rear stands
  • Extra belly pan

Bike upgrades include:
  • Bazzaz traction control + fuel mapper + quick shifter with TC activation light and fuel map switch
  • Woodcraft rear sets
  • Forks have Ohlins internals
  • Rear Elka shock with high/low frequency adjustments
  • Brembo 19x20 master cylinder
  • Brembo calipers
  • Ohlins steering damper
  • Vortex quick release fuel cap
  • New radiator (this season)
  • Replaced coolant hoses with new silicon hoses (this season)
  • Motion pro throttle and start/stop switch
  • Full exhaust with low profile muffler
  • Manual cam chain tensioner installed

I've got it now. The fairings are a little rough. My seller states he low sided it a few times LOL
He rides in the STT Advanced group, and it still has the A sticker from a TD weekend in October 2021.

So It's home, on the stands that came with it- GOOD stands. There's no kickstand.

I was able to get it off the rear stand, move it, and get it back on the rear stand by myself. It's easier with a kickstand.

I had started it on the rear stand, let it warm enough to get the rad fan to come on- about 185F- flashed ECU.
I put it in first, then tried to put it in second with my hand, and FM the shift shaft going to the quickshifter broke!

* Edit- With the help of texting the PO about this, I sourced one off Ebay for about $20 shipped. It'll be here in about 8-10 days.

I got the track fairings off- pretty easy, Dzus for the belly pan, and just a few hex head bolts for the tail and the front. They've already had a few repairs. Still very usable. Im going to go with them for awhile, I won't have to sorry about binning new fairings and paint LOL

It has some nice aftermarket covers and everything is already safetywired.

It came with this box of 'spare parts' too. Stock reworked rear shock. The Right hand control switch, some sprockets, Pins I don't know what they are.
The Axle pins for a Pit bull stand, some old radiator guard? A battery tender- it has a Li battery and the plug for the tender too.
Lots of other goodies- A new n the box OEm clutch kit, etc.

* Edit, there's the stock damper too! I plunged it in and out- like new.
The bike has an adjustable Ohlins Damper- that goes where the OEM went!

And there's a brand new looking rectifier. I know he would not have saved 'bad' parts LOL

What are those 4 Siver pins that have an o ring on them too in the bottom left of this pic?

And what is this plug that's 'unplugged' for? Maybe the rear lights- which there are none?
I looked under my K5 seat, and without digging wires out, I didn't see a plug like this.

Then I dig out this plug from under that bolt in cross brace, and took the cap off.
Weird looking plug, and the cap off is shown there upside down.

The bike runs great.
Bill V., anyone, what are these plugs for?

Taking off the superbike tail finds this little gem:

The bike is fairly clean under the tank, and I had to 'inspect' the air cleaner.
Even the air clear has an 'R' on it! It's foam underneath.

IIRC, my K5 has different velocity stacks? I'm not going in there now to compare though- should be the same.

It has an Elka I'Rear shock?

The front has a sticker from TSE, supposed to have Ohlins internals too.
Last refreshed by them 4/20.

With gear, I'm still light for the setting of the sticker.

Coolant looks good, and it has a new radiator. I'll get the story on the new radiator too from him.

Raising the tank found no vent lines at all. One is a tank vent and one is the overflow for the cap area.

Not pictured is a Vortex keyless cap too.

I think one or both of the for sale postings mentioned a 'full exhaust'.

Looks like a SET exhaust valve delete and suspiciously like the Full Titanium header on my K5.- exactly like it.

It also came with these nifty stands that can go on the rear sets, or the frame sliders.

And a nice front stand for under the steering stem

My K5, and my newer to me K6 Track bike

Before I started some disassembly:

Traction control adjust knob and Map switch on the left.
Keyless on/off on the right.
It has some really nice clip ons too. Vortex or Woodcraft? There is an emblem on them too. MotionPro throttle.

So, today I started the Track bike with the paper clip in the wires in the plug under the seat area.
I had to do a quick search, and a thread form 2009 gave me the confirmation on the wires to jump.

C00, and ( - ), for the TPS location!

** Every now and then, some of ya'll reading this thread could just nod, or post 'uh-huh!' LOL
I think I figured out how/why my shifter linkage broke. After I had test rode the bike a few days before.

I had laid the stands that were also in the deal down in the trailer. The rear stand end up getting caught up against the left side of the bike. When I took it out, the fork for the pins on the rear stand was caught on what I now realize was the shifter linkage. I pulled, it got stuck, I pulled harder and finally broke it loose.

So the next time I started it- on the rear stand and tried to go thru a few gears, I pulled up for first- that compressed the rod- now problem. I then pushed down on it for 2nd, whick actually pulls tension on the rod and it snapped.

OK, I'm learning even more by reading the Original For Sale posts of my new Track Bike.

Original owner had put about 2K miles on it, It was sold to a rider who was a STT coach also.
He apparently rode it on the street, crashed it, bought it bake from Salvage- it had a salvage title, and built his 'track day weapon' out of it.
He had the frame checked by GMD Computrack- and it passed/ it was straight. He had it for years, and built a nice Track bike out of it.
It was first rebuilt to SuperSport specs and Blueprinted by 'Niagara Power Sports'.
His Dyno sheet- 179 RWHP.

After that my PO bought it from the Wera/STT For Sale Ads. He didn't really do much to it, didn't need too!

It came with this:

About a year after he had it, it apparently spun/threw a rod! He had it completely repaired by
Turn One Racing- new rod, crankcase, etc., etc. Re- blueprinted, re-dyno tuned with the Bazzaz tuner, etc.
Here's the last engine rebuild by my PO, I posted this earlier- it's the latest rebuild data:

Now it's my Track Dream Machine. It's like the Millenium Falcon! Like Hans said, ' It may not look like much, but it's got it where it counts!'

I like the fact that I don't really have to worry what much about the fairings- they're a little 'rough' LOL.
My PO did say he 'never high sided it'; But I've had a few low sides.

When he got the bike PO, it had about 9K, He binned up the cluster though and replaced it, this one says about 25K.
Based on the previous threads, and his threads- no way it has 25k on it.
My PO says it has about 13K on it. I figure not over 15K, with 2 engine rebuilds and blueprinted both times! Winning!

An OEM steering damper that doesn't have any air in it is a rare bird. Don't let that get away.

Turn One Racing is run out of the owner's house. Do you know if he has a dyno in his garage or is he using someone else's?

Don't worry about the shifter rod. Dynojet makes them rather soft intentionally. They're designed to be sacrificial. When you replace it, buy 2. I keep a spare in my toolbox too.

Not sure, seems like a pretty legit outfit though. I'd even heard of them on the interwebs LOL.
My guy, RCS Motorsports- not only runs his shop out of his double ++ garage, He has a DynoJet Dyno in the there also!

I had that thought in mind, great idea, thanks Geek!
Don't knock Turn One Racing. Joe knows his shit, and is super supportive and helpful.

Bob Schilter- who now rides a Trick s1000rr in Advanced groups and has raced I believe, from RCS Motorsports in Rubicon WI, who also works out of his garage and has a dyno there- also Knows his shit! Super guy, etc.

He has rebuild my forks I'm currently using on my K5 Street/was track bike, and has Dynoed for me also. the dyno's I posted of my K5 street bike getting 161 RWHP were from his shop.
I just wonder what his next door neighbors think about hearing unmuffled engines pulling to the redline every day. Turn One has a big garage/outbuilding. Perhaps it's acoustically insulated.

An aerial view of RCS (W1056 Hilltop Rd, Rubicon, WI 53078) has me wondering where he has the dyno. I don't see a double ++ garage.

Well, I agree on the noise, he closes some doors to help.
Yeah/naw, on the side of his house he has 2 garage doors, and inside it goes way back in there. It's in the lower level and his home is upstairs.

Bob is a great guy with a great rep. He does great work.
It's gong to be warm-r tomorrow. Low 50'sF
I'm going to install my new shift linkage and try and get it adjusted.

Then I thought, While I have it semi-apart, I'll take off the bottom of the air cleaner box and see what they've done about the PAIR valve. If they're removed the reed valve and blocked it off- I'll leave it that way. But if the reed valves are still there? I'm performing my version of the Pair valve sucker mod FTW!
On my K5 Kiter- doing my version of the Pair valve sucker mod got my nearly 6 more peak HP.
That would easily put this bike into the Low 180's at the RW!

Too damn cold today, but I'm tempted to go and have a look at what's been done to the PAIR today.
