I've always used kerosene and will use nothing else.

ive been using simple green for about 10+ years since ive been riding on every bike ive owned. about 8 bikes. never had any issues, and always made my chain brand new looking. then hose off real good, go for a 10 min ride, then lube as usual.

Use a very soft brush or rags. Wire brushes and stiff bristle brushes will tear the o-rings up. Throw the rear wheel on a stand, put the bike in neutral, put some newspapers under the chain and either soak a soft brush or a rag with kerosene and clean it off, rotating the chain every so often. Then lube. Or spray it down with WD40 if you want I guess.

Personally, I just spray it down with Dupont Teflon lube and call it a day. If it really gets grungy, I do a proper cleaning with kerosene but not often.

I like WD-40 to clean my chain. Mainly because of cost and convenience. But it takes too long for WD to dry and I get too much fling. So I have a refillable spray container I pressurize and I fill it with gas to completely clean the chain from oil residue that WD leaves. I use such little amount just to wipe off the WD40 that it won't hurt the o-rings, not anymore than the ozone, besides chains really go bad from lack of lube, and they never seem to last as long as they say they do. But I have not had any problems with this method, nor do I see any difference in chain life by doing this compared to buying chain cleaner at the dealership. I just notice that I get my chain really clean and keep any fling off to a minimum. But I see that chain cleaning is kinda like oil, everyone has their opinion and ritual, bottom line is the fact that you are servicing your chain makes you a better owner than most people that don't!

I recently (last week) cleaned my chain with WD-40 and it looked brand (freakin) new.

I hated to put that lube back on it.
The WD40 worked pretty good. I even cleaned the rear sprocket and it looked awesome.

yea the wd-40 works fine to clean it. to lube it, ive always used PJ-1 chain lube. once i started using it, it just kinda grew on me and works awesome. and it doesnt fling off all the dried up lube to my fairings so thats a plus! but i mean kerosene is also an inexensive effective way.

I'm too lazy to go and round up a container of kerosene, so I use WD-40 to clean; and a guy I work with has a can of Yamalube :shifty annddd I use that to lube it up.

I use diesel fuel on a rag and a brush you can get online called the grunge brush... it runs about $15 and makes cleaning (with a rear stand) a few minute task. After its clean I squirt some gear oil on the chain and wipe it off to reduce fling and im good to go for another couple hundred miles
