the usual things. check ya tyre pressures, chain not loose and lubed. Radiator is topped up and ok. Levers and cables all work fine. No loose wire connections etc and also do a saftey ckeck on the bike and go over all nuts and bolts etc to see if they are not lose. Oh check ya break pads and disks and tyre tread and no nails etc.
As for riding take a break every two hours or so as fatigue is ur worse factor. Keep ya fluids up and drink water or juice if possible. When riding always give ya self a streach now and then to keep ya self feeling loose. Keep warm and rugged up if the weather is cool or sold. Fatigue again here. Keep ya visor clean.
Tell others when you are going and which roads u will be on and what time u think u will get there. Take a mobile phone if u have one in case something happens. And a map maybe if you are unsure of where you are.
Sound like im your momther lol but yeah just all thgose common things.
And most important take your time and just be visulant of others around you and the cops with radars. try and not speed.
Good luck and enjoy ur ride.

Make sure to look around. I went from Boise, Idaho to Phoenix, AZ - about a 13 hour ride. I noticed when I was ridding, that I would tent to lay on my bag and put my head down for a while... nothing big at first, but when you do that for a good 45 minutes to an hour, you tend to start zoning out. Well, about 8 hours down the road, I was in my "zoning out stage" and found myself about 3 feet from a fox in the road, that I didn't even see comming. Just to be safe man ... look around, it helps to wake yourself up a little and not focus on nothing.

thankfully that hasn't happend to me yet but if u start feeling fatigued pull over and rest for a bit, i did a road trip from rochester, nh to new port richey, fl we left at 4 in the afternoon and drove thru the night(prob not the best idea)once we got tired we pulled over at a rest stop and passed out about 3 feet from our bikes, never renteda hotel, but my lesson is when ur tired stop u feel a whole lot better once ur rested.........just my .02 cents haha

Another suggestion is a cooling vest. Soundrider has a cool one that you soak ahead-of-time and it traps water in a gel
http://store.mm411.com/catalog/index.cfm?fuseaction=product&theParentId=178&id=848.

The cooling effect is tremendous...much better than just vented jacket. Lasts a long time too. Sounds like you're riding through alot of desert so you might check it out.

Also +1 to padded underwear or shorts. Makes a big difference. Throw a powerbar in for a snack, take a big bottle of water, and stop every 2 hours at minimum (preferably every 1 hour..your thighs will thank you and you'll stay better hydrated).

Where in Cali to where in AZ? Should be a walk in the park! :D Tank bag and soft luggage if you have it, a loaded back pack sucks on a long ride. Depending on the length of your ride a means of lubing and adjusting your chain or just have a shop do it for the trip back. A tire plug kit or AAA card can come in handy sometimes. Don't plan on always having a cell phone signal, there are places that don't for miles. Carry enough cash / credit cards incase ya need something. The Throttle Rocker is a big help, a ThrottleMeister evan better. Don't run your fuel to the minimum unless you know where the next station is. Most important thing is HAVE FUN!

you want to buy a extra clutch lever for your trip, there only like 13 buck at the dealership. if for some reason you crash or the bike is tipped and the clutch lever brakes your screwed, the brake lever you can get around by useing the rear brake and engine braking, but the clutch lever is a must to have on a long trip. good luck and ride safe
