rear wheel removal

hi friends,

it's time for new tires and i have a buddy that works at les schwab. i can get a good deal on tires, but only if i bring in the wheel.

the owners manual didn't have the necessary info, and i searched for a thread containing info on removing the rear wheel of my 2003 gsxr 600 but couldn't find anything.

any quick tips? pics would be great too. thanks.

ok 1st have you got a stand to hold it up right as that will make your job much easier. Once up right. loosen the axel nut and take it off with the washer. 36 i think is the size.
Then use a soft hammer is best but any ahmmer will do. Tap that axel though. You will find it easier if you sit on the ground behind the bike and also have your foot under the wheel to support it to make the axel slip out easier. It might be hard to slip out if not greased or lack off. If you Find that once you have hit your axel in to the point that ist flush to the swing arm and that you cant seem to pull out with your hand on the aother side you need to find something like a metal rod or something that will fit in the axel hole and tap that through while pushing the axel out.
So now the axel should have slipped out.
Now push ur wheel in a little so as to get the chain off the rear sprocket. Just hook the chain on the edge of the swing arm to keep it out of the way so as the wheel will now just come straight out the back. If you have that rear plastic guard you will have to just work the wheel around it by leaning it over a little.
As you slip the wheel back grab your rear caliper and just slip that off your rotor. Inside the swing arm there is a slot that the caliper sit in but you can take that out of that spot now. You just need that slipped back in when you put your wheel back on or other wise your caliper will spin around and lock up your back wheel the 1st time you ride your bike.
A spacer on each side should drop off or if not just pop them out.
Now the wheel should be out and then just take off your sprocket off the wheel and inside will be some rubber spacers. I dont mean undo ur sprocket but just grab it with your hands and it will just slip off. This is a good time to clean all your chain lube etc off this whilst out and also clean inside your swing arm and lower linkage of shock and spring.
Ok now to put back on.
Put your rubber spacers back inside the wheel and then put that sprocket and its base that hold it on back on the wheel. I always find it easy to have your wheel flat on the ground to do this and once the sprocket is on top i stomp on it to make sure it sits in the wheel properly.
Now before you put those spacers back on either side just check to make sure these enough grease on them or inside the spot they sit. Once you have now got your wheel back inside the swing arm slip the caliper back over the rotor. It easier to before you do this to get a large flat screw driver and open up the gap between the two pads. By wedging the screw driver between the pads and pushing the piston back a little this gap increase will make it easy to slip that wheel up there.
So now the caliper is on the rotor and also make sure that caliper sits back in that slot inside your swing arm so it wont spin around and lock up. Grab your chain and ease it around the teeth of the sprocket. If all is going well and smoothly You have it all done almsot now. Just need to get your axel and make sure thats greased up well before it goes back in. Align the wheel up so the axel will just slip straight in and push it through. You will probably find it might not make it all the way through as you might have the wheel set off slightly so the exel is hitting the swing arm. Just go by feel and it should go through. Also sometimes you just have to tap the axel through with your hammer. Now once through put back your Spacer thingy that ive forgot right now. lol You know what im talking about. And also the washer and nut. Then just tighten it nice and hard.
Once all is tight and well. You need to pump the rear brake several times untill its hard again. Most important to do this as if you for get you will not have back brakes 1st few tiimes you apply them.
Well i think that will help any one out there who haven't dont this before. Not a hard job just remember caliper in slot nack on and pump back brake till firm. Everything else is straight forward.
