I have adjusted the chain on my bike many times and I came across a discrepancy between the procedure outlined in the service manual and the procedure outlined in the owner's manual.

The service manual indicates that: after adjusting the chain, tighten the axle nut and the torque link nut to the specified torque. Then tighten both chain adjuster lock nuts securely.

The owners manual indicates that: after adjusting the chain tighten the lock nut, tighten the axle nut.
THAT IS IT NO MENTION OF THE TORQUE LINK NUT AT ALL.

I would like to get your views regarding the above mentioned procedures. Personally I have been following the steps detailed in the service manual however the fact that the steps detailed in the owner's manual are reversed and that theres is no mention of the torque link nut is a bit of a concern.

Are you sure you have an 02 owner's manual? The torque link was dropped after 03.

Bottom line is you can't really tighten the adjusters after you have fully torqued the axle nut. I tighten it up most of the way but not all the way tight, do the adjusters, then torque the axle nut. Recheck the tension and alignment afterwards. Some people reverse the direction of the axle bolt and nut so that it does not throw of the alignment when it is tightened.

I have the 02 manual for my bike. I think Australia gets slightly different models sometimes. I have been following the procedure outlined in the service manual but I will try the the method you mentioned.

thanks
